Barcelona’s year as the World Capital of Architecture 2026 is in full swing this June, with a packed calendar of exhibitions, workshops, open days, and guided visits continuing across the city’s 10 districts. The designation, running from February to December, marks a historic moment for a city renowned for its architectural heritage.
A Year-Long Celebration
Barcelona was named the World Capital of Architecture by UNESCO and the International Union of Architects (UIA), recognising the city’s unique architectural legacy from Antoni Gaudí to contemporary urban design. Throughout 2026, the programme showcases the transformative power of architecture and urban planning through hundreds of public events.
This summer, the spotlight turns to the UIA World Congress of Architects, a major international gathering hosted in Barcelona. The congress brings together architects, urban planners, and policymakers from around the globe to address pressing issues such as climate change, sustainable housing, and equitable urban development.
What’s Happening This Summer
Key summer events include guided architectural walks through the Gothic Quarter, open days at iconic buildings normally closed to the public, and interactive workshops exploring sustainable design. Ten districts each host their own programming, from Eixample’s modernist landmarks to Poblenou’s industrial heritage and Gràcia’s village-style squares.
The Joan Miró Foundation, marking its 50th anniversary through June 2026, is participating with special exhibitions including “Poetry Has Only Just Begun: 50 Years of the Miró” and the reopening of the Cypress Garden, previously inaccessible to the public.
