The City of Koronadal marked its 86th foundation anniversary on January 10, 2026, with thousands of residents and visitors gathering for the annual Hinugyaw Festival — a celebration that has become one of the most anticipated events in the Soccsksargen region.

The festival, whose name comes from the Hiligaynon word meaning “merriment” or “joyful celebration,” carried the theme “Gateway to Culture and Creativity.” It brought together indigenous communities, Muslims, and Christians in a shared display of identity forged through decades of history and enriched by diversity.

The day began with a civic-military parade featuring participants from all 27 barangays, government agencies, and private organizations. Vice Mayor Erlinda Pabi-Araquil welcomed attendees on behalf of the city government, noting the remarkable journey from the Marbel Settlement District established on January 10, 1939, to the vibrant city Koronadal has become today.

Senator Loren Legarda served as the event's main guest and keynote speaker, congratulating local officials and residents for building a peaceful and progressive community despite its diverse peoples and cultures. She urged the community to invest in their culture and traditions and to listen to elders and indigenous leaders.

The Hinugyaw Festival was first conducted in 2000, the same year Koronadal became a city after residents ratified Republic Act 8803. Since then, the weeks-long celebration has grown into a cornerstone of local culture, featuring cultural performances, fairs, street dance competitions, and more.

Koronadal originated from two Blaan words — “koron” or “kolon” meaning cogon grass, and “nadal” or “datal” meaning plain. Organic residents call the place “Marbel,” a Blaan word meaning murky waters. The city serves as the capital of South Cotabato and the seat of government of Region 12.
