Bangladesh is currently hosting what organizers call the world’s largest primary school-based sporting event. The Primary School Gold Cup Football Tournament 2026 has engaged over 2.2 million student players from 65,569 government primary schools nationwide, with the national finals now underway in Dhaka ahead of the championship match on June 20.

The tournament, organized by the Directorate of Primary Education under the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, kicked off at the grassroots level on April 6. Matches progressed through union, municipality, upazila, district, and divisional stages before reaching the national round. A total of 123,974 matches were played across the country in both boys’ and girls’ categories.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to attend the final match at the Bangladesh Army Stadium in Dhaka on June 20 and will distribute prizes to the young footballers.

Massive Scale and Participation

According to the Directorate of Primary Education, participation numbers are staggering. In the boys’ category, 1,110,814 players from 65,342 teams competed. In the girls’ category, 1,103,291 players from 65,321 teams took part. The tournament’s scale makes it one of the largest grassroots sporting events anywhere in the world.

Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon inaugurated the national round at National Bangla High School in Mirpur, noting that sports are being incorporated into the national curriculum to develop sportsmanship among children and promote holistic learning. He also highlighted initiatives to make sports mandatory for students and to provide school uniforms to children nationwide.

Opportunities for Custom Sportswear

The Gold Cup tournament, now in its current edition, creates significant demand for custom sports uniforms and team kits. With thousands of schools, 130,000+ teams, and millions of players participating, the tournament represents one of the largest markets for custom printed apparel in Bangladesh.

Each participating school requires team uniforms, practice kits, and training gear. The demand spans screen-printed jerseys, shorts, socks, and track suits. For local garment manufacturers and screen printing businesses, tournaments like the Gold Cup provide a steady annual pipeline of orders.

Grassroots Football Development

The Primary School Gold Cup is part of a broader strategy to develop football talent at the grassroots level. Bangladesh’s women’s football team has achieved remarkable success in recent years, winning back-to-back SAFF Women’s Championship titles in 2022 and 2024. Education officials credit grassroots tournaments like the Gold Cup for building the talent pipeline.

Eight champion boys’ teams and eight champion girls’ teams from the country’s eight divisions have qualified for the national stage. The national-level competition began on June 4, with first-round, semifinal, and third-place playoff matches already completed. The tournament will conclude on June 20 at the Army Stadium with the championship finals.

Community and School Spirit

Beyond the numbers, the tournament has created a festive atmosphere nationwide. From remote villages to urban centers, communities have rallied behind their local school teams. The tournament is designed not just to identify future football stars but to promote physical activity, teamwork, and school pride among Bangladesh’s youngest students.

For suppliers of custom printed sportswear, the Primary School Gold Cup demonstrates the massive and growing demand for school sports uniforms in Bangladesh. With the government integrating sports into the curriculum, this demand is expected to grow year after year.
