The 2026 Palarong Pambansa has brought more than athletic competition to the Caraga Region — it has sparked a remarkable surge in local tourism, with Bislig City in Surigao del Sur emerging as one of the biggest beneficiaries.
According to the Bislig City government, around 180 visitors — including athletes, coaches, game officials, and guests of the national games — flocked to Tinuy-an Falls, widely known as the “Little Niagara of the Philippines,” and the Bislig Baywalk on Thursday, May 28, 2026.
The tourists came from all across the country, including the National Capital Region, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, CALABARZON, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, and various provinces in Mindanao. The wide representation highlighted the national reach of the Palarong Pambansa and its power to draw attention to host regions beyond the sporting venues.
“We are so incredibly grateful to all the athletes, coaches, and Palarong Pambansa guests who chose to make memories in our beautiful city. Your visits keep our community thriving and our smiles bright,” the Bislig City government said in a statement.
Tinuy-an Falls: The Little Niagara of the Philippines
Tinuy-an Falls is one of the most iconic natural attractions in Surigao del Sur. Located in Barangay Burboanan, this breathtaking multi-tiered waterfall stretches approximately 95 meters wide and cascades in three magnificent levels, creating a curtain of crystal-clear water surrounded by lush tropical forests. Its beauty has earned it comparisons to Niagara Falls, and it remains a must-visit destination for travelers exploring Mindanao.
DOT-Caraga Prepared for the Tourism Surge
Department of Tourism – Caraga Region (DOT-13) Director Ivonnie Dumadag said the agency anticipated high visitor traffic for the event. Preparations began as early as last year through training sessions for tourism workers and frontline personnel, along with enforcement of standards among tourism establishments via the DOT accreditation process.
“We congratulate and thank Bislig City for their support to the Palarong Pambansa’s host province, Agusan del Sur, and co-host, Bayugan City,” Dumadag said, adding that DOT-13 hopes to sustain the momentum and ensure a comfortable stay for all visitors in the region.
More Visitors Expected
As the 2026 Palarong Pambansa continued through the week, Bislig City expected even more visitors to explore its waterfalls, coastal walks, and cultural sites. The national games opened on May 25 and concluded on May 31, 2026, in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.
The tourism boost serves as a testament to Bislig City’s growing appeal as a destination in the Caraga Region. With world-class natural attractions like Tinuy-an Falls and the scenic Bislig Baywalk, the city continues to prove that it has much more to offer beyond its reputation as a hub for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
