You got the job — congratulations! But before you walk into the office on your first day, there are a few things you need to prepare. I’ve helped several friends get ready for their first day in both government and private companies here in the Philippines, and the requirements are pretty similar across the board. What you bring on day one can make or break your onboarding experience.

Getting everything ready beforehand shows your new employer that you’re organized and serious about the position. Plus, it saves you from the stress of running around on your first day trying to photocopy documents or fill out forms.

Documents New Employees Need on Their First Day

  • Original and photocopies of your accepted job offer or appointment letter — you’ll need to surrender this to HR for their records
  • Updated resume and Personal Data Sheet (CSC Form 212) — even if you submitted these during the application, bring fresh copies
  • Notarized Omnibus Sworn Statement — especially for government positions, this is required for your appointment. Learn how to prepare your Omnibus Sworn Statement properly
  • SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG numbers — if you haven’t enrolled yet, some companies allow you to do it during your first week
  • NBI Clearance and Barangay Clearance — make sure these are still valid and not expired
  • Medical certificate and drug test results — bring the original document from the accredited clinic
  • Tax forms (BIR 1902 or 1905) — your employer will help you register with the BIR for your tax identification number
  • Passport-sized ID pictures — at least four copies with a white background, for your employee ID and company records

What to Expect on Your First Day

Every company has a slightly different onboarding flow, but here’s a typical first day in a Philippine government agency or private company:

    First Day Onboarding Flow
  • You’ll report to the HR office for check-in — they’ll verify your documents and have you sign employment forms
  • HR will give you a tour of the office — including the restrooms, pantry, emergency exits, and your designated workspace
  • You’ll meet your department head or supervisor, who will orient you on your role and immediate tasks
  • There’ll be a company orientation or employee handbook review — either one-on-one or in a group with other new hires
  • You’ll receive your company ID, email account credentials, and office equipment (laptop, desk phone, etc.)
  • IT will assist you with setting up your accounts and accessing the company network

What to Wear on Your First Day

First impressions matter, and your outfit is part of it. Here’s what’s usually expected:

  • For government agencies — business attire is the standard. Men usually wear barong or long sleeves with slacks, while women wear blouses with skirts or slacks
  • For private companies — it varies, but wearing business casual or smart casual on your first day is always safe
  • Always ask HR about the dress code before your first day — some agencies have designated uniform days
  • Avoid wearing jeans, sneakers, or sleeveless tops until you know the office culture better
  • Wear comfortable but professional footwear — you might be walking around a lot during orientation

Final First Day Tips

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early — traffic in the Philippines is unpredictable, so give yourself extra time
  • Bring a small notebook and pen — you’ll get a lot of information thrown at you on day one
  • Bring your own lunch or enough money to buy nearby — you might not have time to explore the canteen yet
  • Keep an open mind and be friendly — you’re meeting new colleagues who might become your work friends for years
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions — it’s better to clarify something than to assume and make a mistake
