Osaka International Airport (Itami Airport) is set to host the ITAMI Tohoku Matsuri 2026, a vibrant two-day festival celebrating the culture, food, and traditions of Japan’s Tohoku region. Taking place on June 13 and 14, 2026, this free community event offers families and travelers a unique taste of northern Japan without leaving the Kansai area.

Traditional Performances from Tohoku

The festival brings some of Tohoku’s most famous cultural performances to Osaka. Visitors can watch the spectacular Akita Kanto Festival performances, where performers balance massive bamboo poles lit with paper lanterns on their foreheads, shoulders, and hands. The Namahage Taiko drumming from Oga Peninsula will also fill the air with thunderous rhythms, accompanied by performers in the fearsome Namahage demon masks that are a UNESCO-recognized tradition of Akita Prefecture.

These authentic live performances offer a rare opportunity to experience Tohoku’s festival culture up close. The Kanto lantern pole performances will be held at scheduled times across both days, including a special night performance on Saturday evening that promises to be particularly stunning.

Family-Friendly Fun

The ITAMI Tohoku Matsuri 2026 is designed for the whole family. Highlights include an Ultraman Omega Show (on Saturday only), appearances by beloved local mascot characters, and a stamp rally activity that will keep kids engaged throughout the day. For those looking for hands-on cultural experiences, mini Kanto lantern-pole demonstrations and photo sessions with Namahage performers are planned as rain-safe activities.

Food, Shopping, and Travel Inspiration

No Japanese festival is complete without incredible food. The event will feature a free serving of Yamagata’s famous Imoni (a hearty taro and beef hot pot stew) — limited to the first 500 servings each day starting at 2:00 PM. Food booths from across Tohoku will offer regional specialties, allowing visitors to sample the diverse culinary traditions of Japan’s northeast.

For travel enthusiasts, tourism PR booths from Fukushima, Yamagata, Akita City, Yokote City, and the Aizu region will provide information and inspiration for your next trip. Airline merchandise booths from ANA and J-AIR will also be on site.
