United Airlines has officially resumed its nonstop service between Newark, New York and Nuuk, Greenland, marking the second year of the only direct flight route connecting the United States and the world largest island. The twice-weekly service launched on June 6, 2026, one week earlier than last year schedule, signaling growing confidence in Arctic travel demand.

A Historic Route Returns

The Newark-to-Nuuk route first launched in the summer of 2025, becoming the first scheduled nonstop flight between the continental United States and Greenland in more than a decade. The route proved successful enough in its debut season to earn a return — and an expanded schedule at that.

Operated with a Boeing 737 MAX 8, the flight connects Nuuk to United massive hub at Newark Liberty International Airport, feeding onward connections across North and South America. For American travelers, this removes the need to connect through Copenhagen or Reykjavik, cutting hours off the journey to Greenland.

Betting on Off-the-Beaten-Path Travel

United counts Greenland among 36 European-region destinations it is serving this summer. The airline says the route fits into a broader strategy of offering what it calls off-the-beaten-path travel — destinations that go beyond the traditional European map of Paris, Rome, and Barcelona.

According to United, customers are increasingly seeking unique destinations, and the routes from its 2025 expansion performed strongly enough to justify bringing them back. Greenland, with its dramatic icebergs, Inuit culture, and Arctic wilderness, is exactly the kind of destination that appeals to adventurous travelers looking for something different.

What This Means for Greenland Tourism

The return of direct US flights comes at a pivotal moment for Greenland tourism. The island is in the middle of a major airport expansion, with Nuuk new airport already open, Qaqortoq new airport welcoming its first international flights, and Ilulissat set to open a new airport later in 2026.

Together, these infrastructure improvements and new flight routes are opening Greenland up to a whole new wave of visitors. What was once one of the most remote and difficult-to-reach destinations on Earth is rapidly becoming accessible to mainstream travelers.

Planning Your Greenland Adventure

If you have been thinking about visiting Greenland, the combination of new airports and direct flights from the US makes 2026 the best year yet to go. Summer brings nearly 24 hours of daylight, perfect for exploring glaciers, hiking through wildflower-covered valleys, and experiencing Greenlandic culture in towns like Nuuk, Qaqortoq, and Ilulissat.

With United making it easier than ever to get there, Greenland is no longer just for the most hardcore adventurers. It is becoming a realistic destination for anyone with a sense of wonder and a long weekend to spare.
