Fiesta San Pedro 2026 Melaka Returns to Portuguese Settlement June 23-29

The Portuguese Settlement along the coast of Ujong Pasir in Melaka transforms into a vibrant festival ground every June, and this year’s Fiesta San Pedro runs from June 23 to 29. It’s one of Malaysia’s most culturally significant heritage celebrations, honouring Saint Peter — the patron saint of fishing communities — and it draws visitors from across the country and beyond.

For a community that traces its roots back to the Portuguese colonial era beginning in 1511, this week-long event is about much more than a street party. It’s a living link to Kristang heritage, the unique Eurasian culture that emerged from centuries of intermarriage between Portuguese settlers and local Malay communities.

– **The festival kicks off on June 23** with Festa San Juang (St John’s Festival), marked by a Festival of Lights where candles illuminate homes and boats are repainted and decorated with flags and flowers ahead of the main celebration
– **A high mass at the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception** opens the San Pedro celebrations, followed by a procession where the statue of Saint Peter is carried through the settlement down to the shoreline
– **Fishing boats receive a priestly blessing** at the waterfront — a tradition that still carries real meaning for local fishermen who depend on safe waters and a good catch from the Straits of Malacca
– **Evening entertainment takes over Portuguese Square** with live bands, branyo dance performances, and ukulele groups playing traditional Kristang songs that blend humour, nostalgia, and everyday life
– **Food stalls and family kitchens serve heritage dishes** visitors won’t find anywhere else — kari debal (Devil’s Curry), grilled seafood, soy limang terung (aubergine with soy and lime), and the sweet mung bean treat kanjee munggu
– **Boat decoration is an art form in itself** with vessels adorned in New Testament scenes, biblical figurines, nets full of symbolic catch, and young girls dressed as angels standing aboard

The Portuguese Settlement, located about two kilometres south of Melaka town, is home to around 1,000 residents who descend from those early Portuguese settlers. Kristang — a Portuguese-based Creole — is still spoken among older generations, and the festival plays a crucial role in keeping this linguistic and cultural heritage alive among younger members of the community.

**Why this matters beyond Melaka**

Cultural festivals like Fiesta San Pedro are magnets for community organisers, heritage groups, and even corporate teams looking for meaningful ways to engage. If you’re organising a cultural event, a heritage festival hoodie, or custom shirts for a community group planning a celebration like this, there’s plenty we can help with.

We’ve worked with school groups, barangay associations, and cultural organisations on custom apparel for events across the region. For festival organisers, check out how other cultural events have approached their branding. And if you’re planning a trip to explore Malaysia, there’s plenty to see and do around Melaka beyond the festival grounds.
