The Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) is proving that tourism and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand, as showcased in the recently held Suroy Ta Sa Samal tour. This initiative brought together media practitioners, content creators, and representatives from the City Tourism Investment Office and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office on May 26, 2026, highlighting how local businesses are embracing sustainable practices and circular economy principles.
Organized by Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability (Idis) under the EU-Philippines Green Economy Partnership for Circular Economy Education and Behavioral Change Project, the tour featured carefully selected establishments assessed based on circular economy standards. Atty. Mark Peñalver, Idis director, said the initiative was designed to highlight how MSMEs across Samal Island are embracing sustainability.
Eco-Conscious Establishments Take Center Stage
Among the featured destinations was Sunny Houses, promoting sustainable living through solar electricity. The tour also visited Monfort Bat Cave, home to one of the worlds largest fruit bat colonies. Baum Cafe showcased a low-waste refill station offering products without single-use plastic. Dekada Cafe demonstrated reusing waste materials into aesthetic features. La Vida Hostel impressed with eco-friendly hospitality and a live-in art gallery. Completing the tour was Balai Samal, using coconut shells as utensils and abaca fibers as cup holders.
Community Pride Meets Sustainable Tourism
This growing eco-tourism movement presents a perfect opportunity for organizations and communities to showcase their pride. Whether organizing a coastal cleanup or community festival, custom event shirts are a great way to unite participants.
