The National Housing Authority (NHA), in partnership with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) and the Local Government Unit of Tagum City, has launched housing projects dedicated to serving Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs) and Indigenous Peoples (IPs) in the city. The initiative represents a significant step toward inclusive urban development and social equity in the Davao Region.
Project Scope and Partnership
Under the signed agreement, the LGU of Tagum City committed to providing 5 hectares of land in Barangay Canocotan as the project site. The NHA will fund the construction of housing units, while the NCIP ensures that the beneficiaries — members of indigenous communities who are also informal settlers — are properly identified and supported throughout the process.
The project is part of a broader national effort to address the housing needs of marginalized sectors, including indigenous Filipinos who often face displacement due to urbanization and development pressures.
Affordable Housing for Indigenous Families
Each beneficiary household will only need to pay PHP 300 per month for their housing unit, making it one of the most affordable housing arrangements available in Tagum City. This low monthly amortization ensures that even families with limited income can achieve secure and dignified housing.
The housing grant, valued at approximately PHP 80 million, is intended for selected Tagumenyo informal settlers from various barangays across Tagum City. Priority is given to indigenous families who have been living in precarious conditions without access to formal housing.
Supporting Indigenous Rights and Welfare
The project underscores the governments recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples to adequate housing and a decent standard of life. By integrating indigenous communities into formal housing programs, Tagum City and its partners are helping preserve cultural identity while improving living conditions.
Mayor Rellon of Tagum City has emphasized that the right of every Tagumenyo — particularly members of cultural or tribal communities — to safe and secure housing is a fundamental commitment of the local government.
A Step Forward for Inclusive Development
This collaborative housing initiative sets a precedent for how local governments, national agencies, and indigenous communities can work together to address complex social challenges. Tagum City continues to demonstrate its commitment to inclusive growth and equitable development for all its residents.
