The City Government of Tagum has officially launched a comprehensive community health program aimed at improving healthcare access across all 23 barangays in the city. The initiative, dubbed Healthy Tagum, Barangay Health Champions, trains local volunteers to provide basic health education, first aid, and preventive care information to residents in their respective communities.

City Health Officer Dr. Maria Santos led the launch event at the Tagum City Hall grounds, where over 100 barangay health workers and volunteers gathered for the orientation and training program. This program is about bringing healthcare closer to our people. By empowering our barangay health champions, we ensure that even residents in far-flung areas have access to basic health information and services, Dr. Santos explained.

The program covers several key areas including maternal and child health, nutrition education, dengue prevention, mental health awareness, and senior citizen wellness. Each barangay will have at least two trained health champions who will conduct monthly community health sessions and coordinate with the city health office for medical missions and vaccination drives.

Tagum City has long been recognized as one of the most progressive cities in Davao del Norte, and this latest initiative reinforces its commitment to public welfare. The city government has allocated a significant budget for medical supplies, training materials, and transportation support for the health champions.

Barangay Captain Roberto Dizon of Visayan Village, one of the participating barangays, expressed his support for the program. This is a big help for our community. Many of our residents, especially the elderly and those in remote sitios, have difficulty traveling to the city proper for medical consultations. Having trained health champions in the barangay will make a real difference, he said.

The program also includes a digital component, where health champions will use a mobile app to report health data, track community health trends, and request medical assistance from the city health office. This data-driven approach will help the city government identify health priorities and allocate resources more effectively.
