ILIGAN CITY — Mayor Frederick W. Siao led the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between the City Government of Iligan, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 10, Republic Cement Mindanao Inc., and the Santiago Fisherfolks and Livelihood Association for the protection and maintenance of a mangrove plantation in Barangay Santiago.
The agreement supports activities under the National Greening Program and involves local fisherfolk in the management of this vital coastal resource. The initiative aims to protect coastal areas from erosion and strong waves while supporting fisheries by preserving mangrove habitats that serve as breeding grounds for marine life.
The partnership also provides livelihood opportunities for local fisherfolk through community participation in environmental conservation efforts. By involving the Santiago Fisherfolks and Livelihood Association directly in mangrove maintenance and monitoring, the program ensures that those who depend most on the coastal ecosystem have a stake in its preservation.
This collaboration between the city government, DENR, and the private sector through Republic Cement Mindanao demonstrates how public-private-community partnerships can drive meaningful environmental action at the barangay level.
