Close to 5,000 residents of coastal barangays in Pagadian City were evacuated to designated evacuation centers following a tsunami threat triggered by a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck parts of Mindanao. The preemptive evacuation was ordered by the city government as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of communities along the coast.

The city government acted swiftly, mobilizing emergency response teams, barangay officials, and volunteers to assist residents in moving to safer ground. Evacuation centers in schools, barangay halls, and church facilities were quickly set up to accommodate the evacuees, with food, water, and medical assistance provided on-site.

Fortunately, the tsunami warning was later lifted, and residents were able to return to their homes without major damage reported. The incident, however, highlighted the importance of Pagadian City’s disaster preparedness protocols — especially given its vulnerability as a coastal city facing the Moro Gulf.

Local officials have since reiterated their commitment to strengthening early warning systems and conducting regular evacuation drills. The experience serves as a reminder for all coastal communities to remain vigilant and prepared for natural hazards, particularly during the typhoon season.
