Anaheim is a city in northern Orange County, California, and the most populous city in the county with over 346,000 residents. Located about 25 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, it is one of the most visited cities in the world — thanks almost entirely to a certain theme park that opened its doors in 1955. But Anaheim is far more than just Disneyland. It is a city with deep agricultural roots, a thriving convention industry, and professional sports teams that have won championships in three different leagues.
From German Vineyard to Theme Park Capital
Anaheim was founded in 1857 by fifty German families who established a cooperative vineyard colony. The name “Anaheim” comes from the Santa Ana River (“Ana”) and the German word “Heim” (home) — meaning “home by the Santa Ana River.” The city was incorporated on March 18, 1876, making it one of the oldest cities in Orange County.
For nearly a century, Anaheim was a quiet agricultural community known for its vineyards, orange groves, and celery fields. Everything changed on July 17, 1955, when Walt Disney opened Disneyland — the first Disney theme park in the world. The park transformed Anaheim from a small farming town into an international tourist destination virtually overnight. Today, the Disneyland Resort spans two parks (Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure), three hotels, and the Downtown Disney shopping and dining district, drawing over 28 million visitors annually.
Professional Sports and Championships
Anaheim is home to professional sports teams in two major leagues. The Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball play at Angel Stadium, a 45,000-seat ballpark that opened in 1966. The Angels won the World Series in 2002, defeating the San Francisco Giants in a dramatic seven-game series. The Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League play at the Honda Center (formerly Arrowhead Pond). The Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007, defeating the Ottawa Senators.
The city also served as the home of the Los Angeles Rams from 1980 to 1994, before the team moved to St. Louis and eventually returned to Los Angeles. The Rams won Super Bowl LVI in 2022, though by then they were playing in Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium.
The Anaheim Convention Center
The Anaheim Convention Center is one of the largest convention facilities on the West Coast, with over 1.1 million square feet of exhibit space. It hosts major events including the NAMM Show (one of the world’s largest music trade shows), Anime Expo, Natural Products Expo West, and BlizzCon. The convention center and related tourism generate billions of dollars in economic impact for the region.
The Packing House and Local Culture
The Anaheim Packing House, a restored 1919 citrus packing facility in the downtown area, has become one of the city’s most popular dining destinations. This food hall features over 30 artisan vendors serving everything from craft tacos to specialty coffee, housed in a beautiful Mission Revival building that pays homage to the city’s agricultural past.
The city’s historic downtown, known as the Anaheim Colony, features tree-lined streets, independent shops, and a growing arts scene. The Center Street Promenade hosts farmers’ markets, live music events, and community festivals throughout the year.
Transportation and Growth
Anaheim is a major transportation hub in Southern California. The Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) serves as a hub for Amtrak, Metrolink, Orange County Transportation Authority buses, and future high-speed rail connections. The city’s location near the intersection of the I-5, SR-57, and SR-91 freeways makes it easily accessible from anywhere in the region.
With a diverse population — over 55% Hispanic or Latino, along with significant Asian and White communities — Anaheim continues to grow and evolve. New residential and commercial developments are transforming the city, while its core identity as the home of Disneyland remains as strong as ever.
