Buffalo is the kind of city that catches first-time visitors off guard. Sitting on the eastern shore of Lake Erie, it’s closer to Toronto than to New York City, and that Great Lakes location shapes everything — the weather, the food, the architecture, the attitude. After decades of population decline, Buffalo has been quietly reinventing itself, and the result is a city with genuine soul, stunning architecture, and a food scene that punches way above its weight.

Getting There and Getting Around

Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) is about 11 miles east of downtown, with direct flights from most major East Coast and Midwest cities. The Amtrak station sits right in downtown, with service from New York City (about 7 hours) and Toronto (around 2.5 hours including border crossing). The Metro Rail runs along Main Street from downtown to the University at Buffalo campus — it’s free above ground. A car is helpful for exploring the wider region, but downtown Buffalo is very walkable.

What to See and Do

The architecture is Buffalo’s secret weapon. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House is a masterpiece of the Prairie School and one of the finest residential buildings in America. The Guaranty Building by Louis Sullivan is a terracotta-clad skyscraper that still looks modern more than a century after it was built. And the Buffalo Central Terminal — a 1929 Art Deco train station — is slowly being restored and worth the trip just to stand in the main concourse. The waterfront has transformed in recent years. Canalside sits where the Erie Canal met Lake Erie, and it’s now a lively district with concerts, ice skating (in winter), and boat tours. The Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park lets you tour a destroyer, a cruiser, and a submarine docked right on the waterfront. For art lovers, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery has one of the best modern and contemporary art collections in the country — Picasso, Warhol, Basquiat, and a building expansion that doubled its gallery space. The Burchfield Penney Art Center focuses on Western New York artists and is a quieter, more contemplative experience.

Where to Eat

Buffalo wings. Yes, they were invented here, and yes, they’re worth the hype. Anchor Bar claims the origin story, but Duff’s is the local favorite — order them “medium” unless you have a serious tolerance for heat. Beyond wings, Buffalo’s food scene draws from its immigrant roots: Polish pierogies in the Broadway Market, Italian sandwiches in the old First Ward, and a growing number of farm-to-table spots that showcase the region’s agricultural bounty. The Elmwood Village neighborhood is the best area for dining and drinking — a stretch of independent restaurants, coffee shops, and bars that feels like the real Buffalo. For a classic diner experience, Sponge Candy is a local chocolate treat you won’t find anywhere else in the country.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through early fall is the sweet spot. May through September brings comfortable temperatures and a full calendar of outdoor events — the Allentown Art Festival, Taste of Buffalo, and countless neighborhood block parties. Winter is no joke: Buffalo gets heavy lake-effect snow, and temperatures can drop well below zero. But if you’re a winter sports fan, the snow is part of the charm, and nearby Niagara Falls is spectacular when partially frozen.

Practical Tips

Buffalo is one of the most affordable major cities in the United States. Hotels, meals, and attractions cost a fraction of what you’d pay in New York City or Boston. The city is generally safe in the downtown, Elmwood Village, and Allentown areas. Use common sense in unfamiliar neighborhoods at night. Tipping follows standard US norms — 18-20% at restaurants. If you’re driving, be prepared for winter weather conditions from November through March.
