The Erie County Courthouse, located at 92 Franklin Street in Buffalo, New York, is one of the most architecturally significant courthouses in upstate New York. Completed in 1876, this granite Romanesque Revival building has served as the judicial center of Western New York for nearly 150 years.

A Monument to Buffalo’s Gilded Age

The courthouse was built during Buffalo’s heyday as one of America’s wealthiest cities and a major Great Lakes port. The building’s grandeur reflects the city’s prosperity during this era. Designed by architect Milton Earl Beebe, the courthouse features a massive central tower, intricate stone carvings, and a dramatic interior rotunda.

Notable Cases

Erie County courts have handled major criminal trials involving organized crime and political corruption. The civil courts have adjudicated disputes involving Buffalo’s major industries, from grain shipping to steel production. The courthouse has also handled landmark cases involving Native American treaty rights and environmental issues affecting Lake Erie.

Architectural Significance

The Erie County Courthouse is considered one of the finest examples of Romanesque Revival civic architecture in the United States. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
