White Plains is the commercial heart of Westchester County, a city that’s often dismissed as a suburb but has enough going on to justify a visit in its own right. Located about 25 miles north of Manhattan, it’s a major business hub with a skyline that wouldn’t look out of place in a much larger city. For international visitors, White Plains offers a convenient base for exploring the Hudson Valley, with easy train access to New York City and a dining and shopping scene that’s surprisingly diverse.
Getting There and Getting Around
White Plains is one of the most accessible cities in the New York metro area. Metro-North trains from Grand Central Terminal take about 35 to 40 minutes, and the White Plains station is right in the center of the city. The Bee-Line bus system covers Westchester County, and I-287 and the Sprain Brook Parkway provide easy car access. If you’re visiting New York City but want a quieter, more affordable base, White Plains is worth considering.
What to See and Do
The Westchester Mall is the shopping anchor of the region, with high-end stores that draw shoppers from across the metro area. But the real draw for visitors is the city’s cultural scene. The ArtsWestchester gallery hosts rotating exhibitions of regional and national artists, and the White Plains Performing Arts Center hosts concerts, theater, and dance performances throughout the year. For history, the Jacob Purdy House dates back to the 1720s and served as George Washington’s headquarters during the Revolutionary War. The house is small but well-preserved, and the docents bring the history to life with stories that go beyond the textbook version of events. The downtown area has undergone significant revitalization, with new residential buildings, restaurants, and public spaces transforming the city center. The Plaza at White Plains City Center is a good spot to sit and watch the city go about its business. For nature, the Kensico Dam Preserve offers walking trails and a massive dam that’s impressive in its scale.
Where to Eat
White Plains has a surprisingly diverse dining scene for a suburban city. The downtown area along Mamaroneck Avenue and Main Street has everything from upscale steakhouses to authentic ethnic restaurants. The city’s Japanese, Italian, and Latin American communities have produced excellent restaurants, and the Korean restaurants in the area are among the best in Westchester County. For a quick bite, the Westchester Mall’s food court has options ranging from fast casual to sit-down dining. The city’s craft beer scene is growing, with several breweries and gastropubs offering local brews. For dessert, the bakeries along Mamaroneck Avenue turn out excellent pastries and cakes.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons. April through June and September through November bring mild temperatures perfect for walking the downtown area and exploring the nearby parks. Summer is warm, and the city hosts outdoor concerts and festivals. Winter is cold but manageable, and the holiday season brings festive decorations and events to the downtown area.
Practical Tips
White Plains is more affordable than Manhattan for hotels and meals, though prices are higher than in upstate cities. The downtown area is safe and walkable. Metro-North tickets from Grand Central cost about $10 each way off-peak. Tipping follows standard US norms. The city makes an excellent base for exploring the Hudson Valley, with easy access to Kykuit (the Rockefeller estate), the Philipsburg Manor, and the many historic sites along the river.
