Choosing the right ink for your Epson sublimation printer is one of those decisions that makes or breaks your business. I learned this the hard way. My first batch of generic ink cost half the price of the name brands, but I spent two weeks fighting clogged nozzles, inconsistent color, and prints that faded after one wash. The savings evaporated in wasted blanks and refunds.

If you are running a converted Epson L3110, L805, L1210, or any other model in the Epson sublimation ecosystem, here is the honest breakdown of what ink to use, what to avoid, and how to match ink with your specific workload.

What Makes Sublimation Ink Different

Sublimation inks are formulated with dispersed dyes suspended in a carrier fluid. They are different from regular dye-based or pigment inks — they need to vaporize under heat and bond with polyester at a molecular level.

  • Dye particle size matters. Quality sublimation inks have nano-sized dye particles (under 1 micron). Larger particles clog print heads and settle in the ink lines over time.
  • The carrier fluid affects flow. Cheap inks use a thin carrier that evaporates too fast, drying on the print head when idle. You end up running cleaning cycles every morning to recover clogged nozzles.
  • Color gamut varies significantly. Some inks produce a wider range of greens and oranges. Narrow-gamut inks make everything look slightly muted, especially after transfer.
  • The safest bet is ink formulated specifically for your printer model. “Universal sublimation ink” often performs poorly because the viscosity and chemical makeup do not match what the print head expects.

Ink Brands I Have Actually Used

  • Hiipoo: My daily driver for two years now. Reliable clog-free performance, consistent color across batches, competitively priced. I use Hiipoo for 95% of my production work. A 500ml bottle costs around PHP 400 to 550 from local resellers.
  • InkSonic: Slightly more expensive than Hiipoo but offers a wider color gamut. The greens and blues are noticeably punchier. I switch to InkSonic for competition jerseys where color accuracy matters. Costs PHP 600 to 750 per 500ml.
  • WF (WorkForce) branded inks: Pre-packaged for Epson WF-series printers. These are higher quality and produce excellent blacks. However, they cost PHP 800+ per 500ml and availability in provincial resellers is spotty.
  • Cosmos Ink: Budget-friendly at around PHP 300 per 500ml. Decent consistency but the color gamut is narrower. Acceptable for trial prints, personal projects, and non-customer-facing items. I would not use them for paid jersey orders.
  • No-name generic inks from Shopee: Huge gamble. Some work fine for a few prints then clog. Others damage the print head permanently. I stopped testing generics after ruining a print head that cost PHP 2,500 to replace.

Which Printer Model You Have Matters

  • Epson L3110 / L3210: These are the most common sublimation conversion models in the Philippines. They use 4-color CYMK. Hiipoo and InkSonic both have dedicated formulas for these models. Avoid filling the system with ink designed for older Epson printers like the 1390 — the viscosity difference causes feeding issues.
  • Epson L805: An excellent 6-color option that gives better color blending. If you have an L805, use ink optimized for 6-color printers. The additional light cyan and light magenta channels demand finer particle inks. Hiipoo 6-color sets run about PHP 500 per 500ml bottle.
  • Epson L1210 / L1110: Entry-level models with basic CISS. These work fine with standard formulas. The print speed is slower but the ink consumption is manageable. See our sublimation printer price list for which models are worth the investment.
  • Epson SureColor SC-F series (F170, F2100): These are factory-made sublimation printers, not conversions. They use Epson-branded UltraChrome DS inks. Do not use third-party ink in these unless you are willing to void the warranty. The manufacturer ink is expensive — PHP 2,500+ per cartridge — but the color consistency is unmatched.

How to Avoid Buying Fake Ink

Counterfeit ink is a real problem in the PH sublimation market. I have been sold relabeled generic ink disguised as Hiipoo on two separate occasions.

  • Buy from authorized distributors or established local sublimation supply stores, not random flash-sale listings. Ask for proof of authorization if the price seems too good.
  • Check the bottle seals. Genuine ink bottles have a foil seal under the cap and a lot number printed on the label. Fakes often have loose caps or no foil seal.
  • Test a new ink batch before loading it into your production printer. Print a color chart, transfer it to a jersey, and wash it three times. If there is visible fading, the ink is substandard.
  • Some resellers offer 100ml sample bottles. Pay the extra PHP 50 for a sample instead of committing to a 500ml bottle of questionable origin.

Ink Storage and Handling Tips

  • Store ink bottles in a dark, cool place — ideally below 30°C. Direct sunlight degrades the dye particles and alters the color output. In PH summer, that means keeping bottles in an air-conditioned room or a sealed cabinet away from windows.
  • Shake the ink bottle gently before refilling. The dye particles can settle at the bottom over time, especially with white or light-colored sublimation inks. Do not shake vigorously — you create air bubbles that go into the ink lines.
  • Use a dedicated syringe for each color to avoid cross-contamination. I learned this after a stray drop of yellow ink in the magenta tank shifted my entire color profile by 5%.
  • For the best results pairing ink with your printer, read our Epson printer for sublimation guide. It covers printer-specific ink recommendations and print head care.

The right ink for your Epson sublimation printer is the one that fits your printer model, your budget, and your quality requirements. For production work, do not compromise. For prototypes and one-offs, cheaper inks can save a few pesos. Just make sure you test before you bet a customer order on them.
