History

Zeltweg Era (1963–1964)

The Austrian Grand Prix began as a non-championship event in 1963 at the Zeltweg Air Base, won by Australian driver Jack Brabham. The first championship-qualifying race followed in 1964, with Italian Lorenzo Bandini taking his only F1 championship win in a Ferrari. However, the airfield circuit was deemed too dangerous — narrow, bumpy, and with poor spectator viewing — and the FIA removed it from the calendar after just one championship race.

The Österreichring Years (1970–1987)

A permanent circuit — the Österreichring — was built near Zeltweg and hosted its first Austrian Grand Prix in 1970. Set in the scenic Styrian mountains, the track was fast, flowing, and dangerous. Every corner was high-speed and long, making it one of the most demanding circuits on the calendar. The 1975 race was marred by the fatal crash of American Mark Donohue in the rain. The Österreichring era produced legendary moments but was eventually removed from the calendar after 1987 due to safety concerns.

A1-Ring Revival (1997–2003)

The track was rebuilt as the A1-Ring (a shorter, modified version of the original Österreichring) and returned to the F1 calendar in 1997. Michael Schumacher won the inaugural race for Ferrari. The era featured memorable battles between Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen, and the controversial 2002 Ferrari 1-2 where Rubens Barrichello was ordered to let Schumacher pass on the final straight. The race was removed from the calendar after 2003.

Red Bull Ring Era (2014–Present)

In 2014, after Red Bull GmbH purchased and extensively renovated the circuit (shortening it to 4.326 km and adding modern safety features), the Austrian Grand Prix returned to the calendar. Nico Rosberg won the first race for Mercedes. Since then, the Red Bull Ring has become a fan favorite — tight corners provide multiple overtaking opportunities, and the mid-summer date consistently delivers action-packed races. Max Verstappen has dominated in the hybrid era, winning four times (2021–2024).

Styrian Grand Prix (2020–2021)

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a second race at the Red Bull Ring was added to the 2020 calendar as the Styrian Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton won both Styrian Grands Prix (2020 and 2021) for Mercedes. The double-header format allowed F1 to maximize races during the disrupted seasons. The event was discontinued after 2021.
