If your team is joining an organized basketball league here in the Philippines — whether it is a barangay league, a school tournament, or a regional competition — you need to follow FIBA jersey numbering rules. These rules are not just suggestions. Referees can actually flag a team if the numbers do not comply. Here is what we tell our customers who order jerseys for competitive play.

Allowed Numbers under FIBA Rules

  • Numbers 0 and 00 — Both are allowed, but a team cannot have both 0 and 00 on the same roster
  • Numbers 1 to 99 — Any whole number between 1 and 99 is allowed
  • No leading zeros — Numbers like 01 or 02 are not recognized. Use 1 or 2 instead.
  • No fractions or decimals — Only whole numbers are accepted on the court
  • No letters — Even if a player is known by a nickname, the jersey must use a number on the back

Placement and Size Requirements

  • Back number — Must be at least 20 cm (about 8 inches) tall
  • Front number — Must be at least 10 cm (about 4 inches) tall
  • Number color — Must contrast with the jersey color so referees and scorekeepers can read it easily
  • Numbers must be centered — On both front and back, numbers should not be crooked or off-center

Common Violations We See

Shops that do not specialize in sports jerseys sometimes get these wrong. The front number being too small is the most common mistake. Another is placing the team logo over the number. FIBA rules are clear: the number must be the most prominent element on the front chest. If you are ordering from us, we automatically check these requirements before we finalize the layout. Our team sportswear jersey page explains how we ensure compliance during the design phase.

Special Rules for School and Youth Leagues

Some school leagues in the Philippines use modified numbering rules, especially for elementary and high school levels. For example, some DepEd-sanctioned tournaments restrict numbers to 4 through 15 for easier scorekeeping. Check with your tournament organizer first before finalizing your jersey numbers. We recommend reviewing the official FIBA Official Basketball Rules for the complete rulebook.

For teams looking at fabric options that work well with FIBA-compliant sublimation printing, our Polydex fabric page covers the material most teams choose for tournament-ready jerseys.
