Ordering jerseys for your team and not sure which size to pick? You are not alone — this is the number one headache for team captains and school coordinators. Getting the sizing right matters because once the jerseys are printed and cut, there is no going back. Here is our tried-and-tested method for measuring basketball jersey sizes, straight from how we do it at our shop.
Tools You Will Need
- A soft measuring tape (the flexible one used for sewing)
- A flat surface to lay the shirt on
- An existing jersey that fits well (optional, but useful)
Key Measurements
We take four main measurements to get the right fit for a basketball jersey.
- Chest width — Measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape horizontal and snug but not tight. Add 2 to 3 inches for room to move on court.
- Body length — From the highest point of the shoulder down to the hem. Standard adult sizes range from 26 to 32 inches.
- Sleeve length — From the shoulder seam down to the sleeve hem. Basketball jerseys usually have shorter sleeves compared to regular shirts.
- Hem width — Measure across the bottom of the shirt. This ensures the jersey sits well when tucked in or worn loose.
We also have a detailed breakdown on our team sportswear page that goes into more specifics for custom sizing.
Sample Size Chart (Adult Men)
- Small — Chest: 34–36 inches, Length: 27 inches
- Medium — Chest: 38–40 inches, Length: 28 inches
- Large — Chest: 42–44 inches, Length: 29 inches
- XL — Chest: 46–48 inches, Length: 30 inches
- 2XL — Chest: 50–52 inches, Length: 31 inches
Tips for School Teams and Bulk Orders
When ordering for an entire school team or a tournament, we suggest creating a sizing spreadsheet with every player’s name and their three key measurements. This makes production faster and reduces sizing issues. If you are working with Polydex fabric, note that it has minimal shrinkage compared to cotton blends, so you can follow the chart closely without needing to upsize.
For more detailed sizing standards, NCAA uniform guidelines provide a good reference for measurement standards used in competitive play.
What If Someone Is between Sizes?
We always suggest going one size up rather than one size down. A slightly roomy jersey breathes better and looks better on court than something too tight. This is especially important when you are ordering sublimation jerseys since the fabric does not stretch like cotton.
