History

Michigan was originally inhabited by the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi tribes. French explorers and missionaries arrived in the early 1600s, establishing settlements at Sault Ste. Marie and Detroit. Britain gained control after the French and Indian War, ceding the territory to the United States after the American Revolution. Michigan achieved statehood in 1837. The state’s economic destiny was transformed by the rise of the automobile industry in the early 1900s.
