2026 Chongqing International Animation Film Week officially opened on June 9 in Yongchuan District, Chongqing. This event brings together animation talent from around the world for a week-long celebration running through June 15.
Global Animation Magic in Yongchuan District
Guided by China Media Group (CMG) and the Chongqing Municipal Government, the event represents China’s first international animation film festival. A remarkable 501 animated works from countries including the United States, France, Russia, Spain and Brazil were submitted for the main competition.
From these entries, 45 titles were shortlisted for the Golden Camellia Honors, with an international jury headed by legendary Hollywood director Rob Minkoff.
Classic Screenings and Mainland Premieres
The festival showcases nearly 40 classic animated films at more than 30 cinemas across the city. Free outdoor screenings are also held in commercial districts and public squares. Some of the most anticipated titles featured in this year’s lineup include:
- Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel, Across the Spider-Verse.
- All four feature films from the beloved Toy Story franchise.
- The 1957 Soviet animated musical fantasy The Snow Queen, screening for the first time on the Chinese mainland.
- The 1982 French science fiction animated film The Time Masters.
- Classic Chinese animation tributes including The Magical Brush and Little Tadpoles Looking for Their Mother.
- Upcoming cinematic projects such as The Three Kingdoms: The Beginning and Master Zhong.
The opening ceremony at Yongchuan Technology Film Studio blended nostalgic tributes with futuristic visions. The performance combined Chinese and Western musical styles, tracing the 100-year history of Chinese animation. Cultural exchange is a major theme, similar to how the Grec Festival in Barcelona showcases stage shows and international arts.
Technology and Cultural Exchange Sections
Beyond screenings, the film week features sections focused on animation creation, technological innovation, industry integration, and international exchange. Supporting events include masterclasses, industry matchmaking sessions, and themed exhibitions. The Animation Film Theme Market also runs across five major business districts.
Other regional hubs in China frequently host major industrial gatherings during the trade season. For example, business leaders interested in industrial safety and protective gear often attend the Guangzhou safety expo. The annual sports and fitness expo in Guangzhou also highlights the latest in activewear and training technology.
