Chinas ambitious Three Gorges new waterway project is entering its final stages, with the massive infrastructure undertaking on track to open for navigation by the end of 2026. The project, which broke ground in Yichang, Hubei province, represents one of the most significant water conservancy investments in the countrys history and is the first major project to launch during Chinas 15th Five-Year Plan period (20262030).
A Mega-Project for the Yangtze River
The new waterway is designed to dramatically expand the cargo throughput capacity of the Three Gorges hub the worlds largest hydroelectric power station. According to Peoples Daily, once operational, the project will raise the annual cargo throughput capacity to 336 million tonnes, a massive increase that will transform logistics and trade along the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
The project includes a new canal system that allows larger vessels to bypass the existing ship lock, reducing wait times and increasing efficiency for commercial shipping. Construction began in August 2022, and the canal is now in its final stages of completion.
