Kaamulan Festival : Bukidnon’s Month-Long Cultural Celebration

Every year, the province of Bukidnon in Northern Mindanao comes alive for an entire month. The Kaamulan Festival, running from March 23 to April 23, is one of the Philippines’ most authentic cultural celebrations. Just a short drive from Cagayan de Oro City, it is a must-experience event for anyone in the region.

What is the Kaamulan Festival?

The word Kaamulan comes from the Binukid term “amul”, meaning “to gather”. The festival brings together seven indigenous cultural communities of Bukidnon. Each group comes to showcase its distinct heritage, traditions, and unity.

Unlike many Philippine festivals, Kaamulan stays firmly rooted in indigenous culture. It is widely regarded as one of the few genuinely ethnic festivals in the country. It is a celebration of identity, pride, and living heritage.

Seven Indigenous Communities of Bukidnon

The heart of the festival is the participation of seven indigenous cultural communities:

  • Bukidnon
  • Talaandig
  • Tigwahanon
  • Manobo
  • Umayamnon
  • Matigsalog
  • Higaonon

Each community brings its own unique contribution. From intricately woven garments and native costumes to traditional music and dance, these are traditions passed down through generations.

What to Expect at the Festival

Cultural Performances and Rituals

Witness breathtaking ceremonial dances, rituals, and performances. Each performance tells the story of a community’s history, beliefs, and way of life. These are not staged re-enactments – they are living expressions of tradition.

Traditional Garments and Crafts

Each community dresses in distinctive native costumes adorned with traditional weaves, beadwork, and accessories. The festival is a visual feast of indigenous textile artistry. Local crafts, handwoven fabrics, and cultural artifacts are also on display and available for purchase.

Indigenous Sports and Games

The festival features competitions in traditional indigenous sports. These events give each community a chance to demonstrate physical prowess and competitive spirit in culturally meaningful ways.

Agricultural and Cultural Exhibits

Bukidnon is the breadbasket of Mindanao. The festival celebrates this agricultural bounty with exhibits of native produce, traditional farming tools, and indigenous food products.

Where and When

The Kaamulan Festival 2026 runs from March 23 to April 23, 2026. It is centered in Malaybalay City, the capital of Bukidnon province. Malaybalay is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by road from Cagayan de Oro City. This makes it an easy day trip or a great excuse for an overnight stay.
