The Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), in partnership with the Manila North Tollways Corporation (MPTC), is set to display real-time air quality data along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), in a move that will benefit thousands of daily commuters passing through Meycauayan, Bulacan, and nearby cities.

Announced on June 18, 2026, the initiative aims to provide motorists and surrounding communities with accessible information about air quality levels along one of the country’s busiest expressway corridors. Air quality monitoring stations will be installed at strategic points along NLEX, with data displayed on digital boards visible to passing vehicles.

The project is part of the EMB’s broader mandate to monitor and manage air quality across the Philippines, particularly in high-traffic zones where vehicle emissions contribute significantly to pollution levels. NLEX, which connects Metro Manila to Central Luzon and passes directly through Meycauayan, is one of the most heavily trafficked highways in the country, with tens of thousands of vehicles passing through daily.

For residents of Meycauayan, the initiative represents a significant step toward environmental awareness and public health protection. Meycauayan, being a key entry point to NLEX from Bulacan, experiences heavy traffic congestion, particularly during rush hours. The real-time data display will help commuters and local officials make informed decisions about outdoor activities and traffic management strategies.

MPTC, which operates NLEX, has been collaborating with various government agencies to improve the expressway’s environmental footprint. The air quality monitoring project complements ongoing efforts to maintain road safety, reduce congestion, and improve the overall commuting experience for motorists.

The EMB encourages the public to stay informed about air quality conditions by checking the digital displays along the expressway and through official EMB channels. The agency continues to expand its air quality monitoring network across Metro Luzon as part of its commitment to cleaner air and healthier communities.
