Racco-Davao Urges Local Government Units to Establish Foster Care Programs
Tagum City, Davao del Norte — The Regional Alternative Child Care Office-Davao Region (Racco-Davao) is calling on local government units (LGUs) across the region to actively participate in and establish foster care programs, as the number of children in need of loving foster families continues to rise.
In a statement released this week, Racco-Davao emphasized that the growing number of children requiring alternative care has made it imperative for LGUs to step up and integrate foster care into their local social welfare programs. The office noted that while the existing foster care system has helped hundreds of children, the demand far outpaces the current capacity.
“We are encouraging the public to be part of the foster care program as the number of children in need of foster families increases,” Racco-Davao said, adding that LGUs play a critical role in identifying, training, and supporting prospective foster parents within their jurisdictions.
Foster care provides a temporary but stable home environment for children who cannot remain with their biological families due to various circumstances, including abuse, neglect, abandonment, or the incapacity of parents. The program aims to give these children a safe, nurturing environment while long-term solutions — such as reunification or adoption — are explored.
Racco-Davao highlighted that LGUs in the Davao Region, including Tagum City, have the resources and community networks needed to make foster care programs successful. The office urged local officials to allocate budget and personnel for foster care services, conduct information campaigns to recruit foster families, and partner with NGOs and faith-based organizations already involved in child welfare.
The office also reminded the public that foster care is not just a government initiative — it is a community effort. Families who are willing to open their homes and hearts to children in need can inquire at their local DSWD office or the Racco-Davao regional office for information on how to become licensed foster parents.
Individuals and families interested in the foster care program may contact the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office XI or visit the Racco-Davao regional office for details on requirements and the application process.
