The Department of Agriculture (DA), in partnership with the World Bank, officially broke ground on a major infrastructure project in Surigao City—a P365.89-million farm-to-market road expected to transform the lives of local farmers and communities.

The 6.51-kilometer road will connect 10 villages across Surigao City and the neighboring town of Sison in Surigao del Norte. The DA expects the project to significantly slash transportation costs and minimize post-harvest losses for agricultural producers in the area.

The road covers approximately 2,182 hectares of production zones for coconut, rice, corn, and banana—key agricultural commodities that drive the local economy of Surigao City. By providing a more reliable and efficient route from farm to market, the project aims to boost income for thousands of farming families in the region.

DA Secretary led the groundbreaking ceremony in April 2026, emphasizing that the infrastructure is a lifeline for farmers who have long struggled with poor road conditions and high transport costs. The project is targeted for completion by 2027.

This investment is part of the national governments broader push to improve rural infrastructure and strengthen the agricultural supply chain across the Philippines. Surigao City, as a key port city and a gateway to Siargao Island, stands to benefit greatly from improved connectivity to its agricultural hinterlands.

Local officials and residents have welcomed the project, expressing hope that the new road will spur economic growth and open up more opportunities for trade and commerce in the area.
