Davao City mourns the loss of one of its brightest young basketball stars. Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia, the 19-year-old Palarong Pambansa 2025 Most Valuable Player from Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU), was laid to rest after a tragic drowning incident during an off-campus training session in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8.
A Rising Star from Davao
Baterbonia, a native of Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, was an alumnus of ADDU Senior High School Class of 2026. Known as “Bobet” and “Gentle Giant,” he made waves in Philippine secondary school basketball as the Most Valuable Player and gold medalist in secondary boys basketball of Palarong Pambansa 2025, the country’s largest multisport event.
His journey from Davao’s courts to national prominence is a story of dedication and community support. For teams aspiring to excellence, sports jerseys and uniforms help build team identity.
Homecoming to Bangkal
On June 12, Baterbonia’s remains arrived at the ADDU Senior High School campus in Bangkal, Davao City. The university held public viewing at Christ the King Chapel from June 12 to 14. ADDU President Karel San Juan honored Baterbonia as “Forever a Blue Knight.” The community came together in grief. This is what makes Davao City school communities special.
DAVRAA Eagles to ASEAN Games
Baterbonia was part of the Philippine team that won gold at the 14th ASEAN School Games in Brunei Darussalam in 2025, composed mainly of DAVRAA Eagles players. For teams aspiring to that level, custom basketball uniforms help build team identity and pride.
Big Dreams
Before leaving for Manila, Baterbonia told his ADDU coach he wouldn’t be home for five years because he wanted to earn money to help his family. Social media has been filled with tributes remembering his humility and dedication. His story reminds us of the talent Davao City produces, and the importance of custom school and community shirts that unite us.
Rest in peace, Bobet. Once a Blue Knight, always a Blue Knight.
