Baybay City emerges as a vibrant component city in Leyte province, celebrated for its academic excellence, agricultural innovation, and stunning coastal landscapes. Located along the western coast of Leyte Island, this progressive city has established itself as a center of learning and sustainable development in Eastern Visayas.
History of Baybay City
The area that is now Baybay has been inhabited since pre-colonial times, with early settlers engaging in agriculture and fishing. The city’s name derives from the local term meaning “beach” or “shore,” reflecting its coastal geography and the community’s deep connection to the sea.
Spanish colonial period saw the establishment of Catholic missions in the area, with the Jesuit and later Augustinian missionaries playing crucial roles in evangelization and community development. The settlement gradually grew into a significant trading center due to its strategic coastal location.
Baybay achieved city status through Republic Act No. 9389, which was ratified through a plebiscite on December 15, 2007. This elevation to cityhood marked a new chapter in its development, enabling greater autonomy and resources for local governance and infrastructure development.
Population and Demographics
According to the 2024 census, Baybay City has a population of 114,708 people. The city covers a land area of 45,934 hectares, making it one of the largest component cities in the Philippines by land area. The population density is approximately 250 inhabitants per square kilometer.
The population speaks a mix of Cebuano and Waray languages, reflecting the city’s location between Cebuano-speaking western Leyte and Waray-speaking eastern areas. The demographics show a significant student population due to the presence of major educational institutions.
Local Government and Barangays
Mayor Jose Carlos L. Cari leads the city government, bringing extensive experience from his previous role as representative of the Fifth District of Leyte. Vice Mayor Ernesto M. Butawan presides over the Sangguniang Panlungsod, which exercises legislative authority over city ordinances and policies.
Baybay City comprises 92 barangays, with 23 located in the Poblacion (city center) and 68 classified as rural barangays. Each barangay has its own local government structure headed by a barangay captain, ensuring grassroots governance throughout the city.
