What Is the Middle Corridor?
The Middle Corridor, also known as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, connects China to Europe through Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Black Sea. Since 2022, as countries sought alternatives to the Northern Corridor through Russia, cargo volumes along this route have surged dramatically. Annual freight volumes jumped from around 0.6–0.8 million tonnes between 2019 and 2021 to over 4.5 million tonnes in 2024.
Massive Infrastructure Investments
Azerbaijan has made strategic investments to support this growth. The Baku International Sea Trade Port in Alat is undergoing a major expansion, with a target capacity of 25 million tonnes of cargo and 500,000 TEU containers annually. The Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway, operational since 2017, has been upgraded to handle 5 million tonnes of cargo per year.
During the first 11 months of 2025 alone, Azerbaijan Railways handled more than 350 block trains from China — a 34% increase compared to the previous year. Container throughput at the Port of Alat rose by 40.8% in the same period.
