The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has confirmed that the new passenger terminal building at the Port of Lucena in Quezon Province will be ready for the third quarter of 2026. This infrastructure upgrade aims to improve the travel experience for the thousands of passengers who pass through Lucena’s port every day.

Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez announced on May 7 that the passenger terminal building (PTB) is nearing completion. Once operational, the expanded facility will raise the port’s daily passenger capacity and support tourism and maritime commerce across Quezon Province and the broader CALABARZON region.

What passengers can expect from the upgraded terminal

The new terminal brings several improvements designed to make sea travel more convenient and comfortable. Here is what travelers can look forward to:

  • Larger passenger capacity — The expanded space will accommodate more travelers at once, easing congestion during peak seasons like Holy Week and All Saints’ Day.
  • Automated ticketing system — A modern digital ticketing platform will speed up boarding and reduce time spent waiting in line at ticket counters.
  • Better comfort and amenities — Air-conditioned waiting areas, clean restrooms, and improved seating will make waiting for vessels a more pleasant experience.
  • Tourism boost for Quezon — The upgraded port is expected to attract more visitors to Quezon Province destinations, including the nearby islands of Marinduque and Romblon.
  • Stronger inter-island connectivity — The Port of Lucena serves as a key hub for roll-on/roll-off (RORO) vessels and fast crafts linking Luzon to the Visayas and Mindanao.
  • Local economic impact — Nearby businesses — eateries, transport services, and souvenir shops — stand to gain from higher passenger traffic through the port.

Strategic importance of the Port of Lucena

Lucena’s port has long been a vital gateway for Southern Luzon. It connects Quezon Province to key destinations across the archipelago, making it an essential piece of the country’s maritime network. The new terminal supports the DOTr’s broader push to modernize Philippine port infrastructure and elevate the standard of passenger service.

For travelers, this means smoother, more dependable trips to and from Lucena City starting in the third quarter. Whether someone is visiting family in the province or heading on a weekend getaway to the beaches of Quezon, the upgraded terminal will make the journey easier from the moment they step into the port.
