Over a Century of Healing: Evolution from 1919 to the Modern Era
Northern Mindanao Medical Center holds one of the longest continuous traditions of public healthcare service in Mindanao. What began during the American colonial period has evolved through seven landmark statutory expansions into the region's leading medical institution.
Misamis Public Hospital
Established in Carmen, Cagayan de Misamis (now Cagayan de Oro) inside a repurposed wood and nipa schoolhouse in urgent response to a regional cholera outbreak. Formally christened Misamis Public Hospital.
Provincial Capitol Relocation
Constructed a permanent wooden hospital pavilion at its present site within the Provincial Capitol Compound with an authorized 25 bed capacity, establishing central geographic connectivity.
Misamis Oriental Provincial Hospital
Renovated following wartime damage and renamed Misamis Oriental Provincial Hospital in 1945. Capacity expanded to 50 beds, and subsequently enlarged in 1956 to 75 beds through additional concrete wings.
Republic Act No. 4662 (NMRTH)
Enacted on June 18, 1966, designating the institution as the Northern Mindanao Regional Training Hospital (NMRTH). Mandated departmentalization, authorized 200 beds, and chartered official teaching hospital operations.
Northern Mindanao Community Heart Center
Established an official satellite facility of the Philippine Heart Center within the hospital complex, delivering specialized cardiac surgery, catheterization, and cardiovascular care to Mindanao patients.
Republic Act No. 7938 (NMMC)
Signed into law on March 11, 1995, formally renaming the facility to Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC), reclassifying it as a Level III medical center, and upgrading authorized capacity from 300 to 600 beds.
Republic Act No. 11716 & The 2026 Vision for 3,000 Beds
On May 5, 2022, Republic Act No. 11716 officially doubled NMMC's authorized bed capacity from 600 to 1,200 beds. In October 2026, NMMC Medical Center Chief Dr. Alvin P. Quiñon presented the next evolutionary chapter to Department of Health Secretary Dr. Edwin M. Mercado: expanding NMMC into a 3,000-bed apex tertiary health city.
Key Milestones of the 2026 Development Roadmap
- 3,000-Bed Tertiary Capacity Target: Scaled to accommodate the expanding referral load from Region 10, Caraga, Lanao, and neighboring provinces under Universal Health Care (UHC).
- San Simon Infectious Disease Center: Full operations of the dedicated Center for Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases (EREID) situated in Barangay San Simon, inspected by DOH leadership on October 14, 2026.
- Specialized Multi Tower Health Complex: High rise multispecialty clinical towers integrating cardiology, oncology, pediatric surgery, nephrology, and neurology.
