Kidapawan City — Despite lingering fears from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck on June 8, the City Government of Kidapawan successfully conducted the 2nd Quarter Nationwide Earthquake Simulation Drill to test the readiness and preparedness of its residents and institutions.

The drill, held at exactly 9:00 AM, began with the sounding of sirens at City Hall as a signal for a simulated earthquake. City employees promptly evacuated their offices and assembled in front of City Hall in an orderly manner. Those who remained inside their buildings practiced the “Duck, Cover, and Hold” technique as protection against potential falling objects or collapsing structures.

The exercise was not limited to City Hall. Schools, various government offices, and business establishments across Kidapawan City also participated in the synchronized drill, demonstrating a city-wide commitment to disaster preparedness.

The Office of the Civil Defense, together with the City Government of Kidapawan through the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), urged all residents to take earthquake drills seriously. Officials emphasized that regular practice of these safety procedures is essential for saving lives when an actual earthquake occurs.

The June 8 magnitude 7.8 earthquake served as a stark reminder of the seismic risks facing the region. Kidapawan City, located in North Cotabato in the Soccsksargen region, lies in an area that is no stranger to significant seismic activity. The successful conduct of the drill just days after the real earthquake showed the community resilience and determination to be better prepared for future events.

The CDRRMO continues to coordinate with schools, barangays, and private sector partners to strengthen the city disaster risk reduction capabilities. Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with evacuation routes, prepare emergency kits, and participate actively in future drills.
