KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato — While the vibrant colors of T’nalak cloth and festive cultural performances have long defined South Cotabato’s premier annual celebration, this year’s T’nalak Festival 2026 is adding a powerful new dimension: sports tourism under the banner of ‘race-cation.’

Provincial sports organizers are positioning South Cotabato as a destination where athletes, enthusiasts, and tourists can simultaneously compete in sporting events and explore the province’s natural and cultural attractions. The concept combines fitness, adventure, tourism, and competition into one compelling package.

17 Sports Events Across June and July

The sports calendar, which kicked off on June 6, features an ambitious lineup of 17 sporting events spanning road races, cycling competitions, and various tournaments. These events build momentum leading up to the week-long T’nalak Festival main celebration from July 10 to 18, 2026 — marking the province’s 60th Founding Anniversary and 27th edition of the festival.

The flagship event, the Dreamweavers Marathon, is expected to draw runners from across the country. Race Technical Director Allan De Lima explained that the race-cation concept offers participants more than just a finish line. “A race-cation is more than simply joining a race. It is an opportunity for runners to travel, compete, and immerse themselves in the culture, food, and destinations of the host community,” De Lima said.

World-Class Sports Facilities

South Cotabato’s sports complex, located along Alunan Avenue in Koronadal City, has undergone significant rehabilitation in recent years. The facility now features an Olympic-size swimming pool, a rubberized oval track, tennis and basketball courts, volleyball courts, and athletics facilities — all positioned to host large-scale sporting events.

Provincial Sports Coordinator Paul Millan emphasized that the sports calendar was intentionally designed to cater to different interests and age groups, encouraging both competitive athletes and recreational participants to take part. “We want visitors to see South Cotabato not only as the home of the T’nalak Festival but also as a race-cation destination. Athletes can come here for competition and leave with memorable experiences,” Millan said.

Boosting Local Economy Through Sports Tourism

Senior Tourism Operations Officer Argie Ryan Asaria noted that sports tourism has become an increasingly important segment in attracting visitors. “Participants are not only coming to race; they are also staying longer to explore our waterfalls, lakes, cultural communities, farms, and culinary offerings. Through these events, we are showcasing South Cotabato as a destination where adventure, wellness, and culture converge,” Asaria said.

The initiative aligns with the province’s broader tourism strategy of promoting experiential travel — where visitors actively engage with local communities rather than merely passing through. As thousands of athletes, supporters, and tourists converge in South Cotabato over the coming weeks, the race-cation concept is expected to further strengthen the province’s reputation as one of Mindanao’s emerging sports tourism destinations.
