Cloud 9 Siargao: Surf Break, Boardwalk and Visitor Guide
Cloud 9 is the wave that put Siargao on the world surf map: a fast, hollow right hander breaking over shallow reef a few kilometres north of General Luna. This is the current guide to the boardwalk and viewing tower, the surf season that matters, why beginners should not paddle out here, what it all costs, and how to get there at sunrise.
A World Class Wave Over Shallow Reef
Cloud 9 works best on a mid to high tide with a solid northeast swell. When it is on, the barrel is long, fast, and unforgiving, and the lineup fills with people who know exactly what they are doing. Here are the facts that decide your day.

The Surf Season, Month by Month
Pacific typhoon swells build through the second half of the year. The serious size runs from August to November, with September and October the most consistent. The dry season brings smaller, cleaner waves that suit confident intermediates.
The Siargao International Surfing Cup is held here every October, usually late in the month, and the tower and shoreline fill with spectators. Book accommodation early for that window, and expect bigger crowds at the break.
The Boardwalk and the Viewing Tower
A wooden boardwalk runs out over the shallow reef to a viewing structure directly above the break. For most visitors this is the single best way to experience Cloud 9, standing metres above surfers dropping into the barrel. It faces east, so sunrise is the cleanest and quietest window.

The boardwalk fee is a small environmental charge of about ₱50.00 to ₱100.00 (about $0.80 to $1.59 / €0.69 to €1.39 / £0.60 to £1.19) per person, collected by hand from around 7 AM to 5 PM. Residents of Surigao del Norte enter free with a valid local ID, and photographers who arrive before collection starts at about 7 AM often walk out without paying. Surfing the wave itself is free; the fee only covers the boardwalk and viewing area. Arrive early: the light is best, the wind is offshore, and the planks are empty.
Wear shoes, because the wooden planks get very hot in direct sun, and bring cash for the fee and parking.
Tower status: the original three storey tower was destroyed by Typhoon Odette in December 2021. A stripped back platform stood for several years, and a full renovation began in April 2026, so you may find the far end closed or mid construction depending on when you visit. The boardwalk and shoreline still give a clear view of the break.
Surfing Cloud 9, Honestly
Cloud 9 is not a beginner wave. It breaks over shallow coral, the takeoff is steep, and beginner lessons are not allowed at the break. The safe way in is to build up on the softer sand bottom breaks beside it, with an instructor.
Start at Jacking Horse or Quicksilver
The mellow sand bottom breaks beside the boardwalk are where lessons happen. Book an instructor who is SISA accredited (Siargao Island Surfing Association), which sets the safety standards on the island.
Build confidence on reef
Get comfortable with a solid pop up, duck diving, and paddling in a crowd. A few days on the beginner breaks is the honest minimum before you think about a reef wave.
Cloud 9 on a small day, with a guide
Strong intermediates can paddle out on smaller days, ideally with a local guide who reads the reef and the sets. Watch a few sets from the boardwalk first and be honest about your level. Mid to high tide only, because the shelf is too shallow at low tide.
This is Cloud 9Respect the lineup
Cloud 9 has a strict local pecking order. Dropping in on the wrong person is a fast way to make enemies. Watch, wait your turn, and never enter at six feet or above without the ability to handle a fast, hollow reef wave.
