Heritage

Why It Is Called the Old Cathedral

The parish dates to 1947, when the church on Rizal Street became one of the earliest Catholic communities in the young town of Tagum. When the Diocese of Tagum was established, this church served as its cathedral, which is why residents still call it the Old Cathedral even though the seat of the diocese later moved to the newer Cathedral of Christ the King on Gonzales Avenue.

After the transfer, the old church kept its people and its place in the city centre. It was renamed the Parish of Christ the Eucharistic King and today it belongs to the Vicariate of Christ the King, one of the parishes closest to the heart of Tagum City.

It is also a Jubilee church, listed among the churches of the 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines and the Holy Year 2025, which keeps it on the itinerary of pilgrims and Visita Iglesia groups each Lent.
