Bulgaria is officially entering its first major summer heat wave of 2026, with meteorologists warning that temperatures will soar between 30°C and 35°C across most of the country over the coming days. In some areas, the mercury could climb as high as 38°C, making this one of the hottest periods Bulgaria has experienced in recent summers.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, today marks the beginning of a significant warming trend. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 28°C and 33°C, with Sofia hovering around 29°C. By Sunday, temperatures will rise further, reaching 34-35°C in many regions. The first week of summer promises to be particularly hot, with daily highs frequently exceeding 30°C.

The Black Sea coast will offer some relief, with temperatures staying between 23°C and 26°C, and sea water temperatures ranging from 19°C-21°C along the northern coast to 23°C in the south. Mountain areas will also provide a cooler retreat, with temperatures at 1,200 meters around 20°C and at 2,000 meters around 13°C.

Health authorities are advising citizens to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak hours (11 AM to 4 PM), and wear light, breathable clothing. The elderly, young children, and those with chronic conditions are particularly vulnerable during extreme heat events.

This heat wave arrives right at the start of the summer season, coinciding with the end of the school year and the beginning of vacation season for many Bulgarian families. Beach destinations along the Black Sea coast are expected to see a surge in visitors looking to escape the inland heat.

For those planning outdoor activities, early mornings and late evenings will be the most comfortable times. Whether you are heading to the beach, hiking in the mountains, or enjoying a summer festival, make sure you are prepared with sun protection, plenty of water, and appropriate summer apparel.

Stay cool, stay safe, and embrace the Bulgarian summer in style!
