North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), also called the North Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental transnational military alliance of 32 member states—30 European and 2 North American. Established in the aftermath of World War II, the organization implements the North Atlantic Treaty, signed in Washington, D.C., on April 4, 1949.
Founding and Purpose
NATO is a collective security system where independent member states agree to defend each other against attacks by third parties. During the Cold War, NATO operated as a check on the threat posed by the Soviet Union. The alliance remained in place after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, and has since been involved in military operations in the Balkans, the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa.
Headquarters and Strategic Concepts
NATO’s main headquarters are located in Brussels, Belgium, while its military headquarters are near Mons, Belgium. The organization’s strategic concepts include deterrence, and its motto is animus in consulendo liber (Latin for ‘a mind unfettered in deliberation’).
Military Strength and Spending
The combined militaries of all NATO members include around 3.5 million soldiers and personnel. NATO’s members collectively cover 25.07 million km² (9.68 million sq mi), with a population of about 973 million people. Their combined military spending as of 2022 constituted around 55% of global nominal total military expenditures. NATO members have also committed to reaching or maintaining the target defense spending of at least 2% of their GDP by 2024.
Enlargement and Aspiring Members
NATO was founded with 12 original members and has expanded 10 times, most recently with Sweden joining on March 7, 2024. The alliance recognizes Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, and Ukraine as aspiring members.
