The 665th Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival is scheduled to take place in Edirne, Turkey, from late June to early July in 2026. This historic event stands as one of the oldest continuously running athletic tournaments in the world.
Spectators from all corners of the globe gather to witness the elite pehlivans, or wrestlers, compete in an intense display of strength and honor. Wrestlers cover their bodies in olive oil before matches, which makes securing a grip extremely difficult.
This ancient festival is a major highlight of the annual cultural calendar. Travelers visiting the country during this period often plan their itineraries to experience other national cultural celebrations taking place across different provinces.
Legend and Origins of Kırkpınar
According to local legends, the tournament traces its roots back to 1361 during the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans. A vanguard of forty soldiers camped near Edirne and began wrestling to maintain their physical conditioning.
Two final warriors grappled for hours without victory and eventually died from pure exhaustion. Their companions buried them under a fig tree and later returned to find a spring of clear water bubbling from the spot.
The site was named Kırkpınar, which means forty springs in the Turkish language. This noble event became an annual tradition to honor the memory of those legendary warriors. Today, the festival still maintains its deep spiritual significance and strict traditional rules.
Referees and drum players guide the matches, which can last up to forty minutes in the premier category. The ultimate goal is to pin the opponent’s shoulders to the grass or lift them off the ground. Wrestlers wear specialized leather trousers called kispet, which are handcrafted from water buffalo skin.
These heavy garments weigh around thirteen kilograms and are tied tightly around the waist and knees. Managing the extra weight while covered in slick oil requires immense endurance and technical skill.

Intangible Heritage and Unique Traditions
The unique cultural value of this tournament has received significant international recognition. The event was officially inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2010. This status helps preserve the ancient rituals, music, and sportsmanship for future generations.
Traditional musicians play the davul drum and the zurna pipe throughout the entire competition. The rhythmic beats build excitement as wrestlers perform their ceremonial warm-up dances. These rituals create a lively atmosphere that transports visitors back to the historic Ottoman era.
The winner of the top category receives the prestigious title of Başpehlivan, or Chief Wrestler. Achieving this honor brings national fame and a beautiful golden belt that the champion keeps for a year. Winning the tournament three years in a row allows a wrestler to keep the golden belt permanently.
Here is a list of the core traditions that make the event unique:
- Wrestlers cover their bodies with pure olive oil to make grappling more challenging.
- Competitors wear hand-stitched leather trousers known as kispet.
- Musicians play traditional zurna and davul instruments to set the tempo of the matches.
- Wrestlers recite a traditional oath emphasizing respect and sportsmanship before they begin.
- The chief wrestler earns a golden belt and the prestigious title of Başpehlivan.
- Edirne hosts vibrant food markets, folk dance performances, and community feasts during the week.
