Amtrak (National Railroad Passenger Corporation)

The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, commonly known as Amtrak, is the national passenger railroad company of the United States. Operating intercity rail service in 46 of the 48 contiguous U.S. states and 3 Canadian provinces, Amtrak is a portmanteau of the words “America” and “track.”

History and Formation

Amtrak was founded on May 1, 1971, as a quasi-public corporation to manage and operate passenger rail services across the country. It was established to consolidate various financially struggling railroads that previously provided passenger services. Amtrak receives both state and federal subsidies but operates as a for-profit organization.

Headquarters and Leadership

  • Headquarters: Washington, D.C., United States
  • CEO: Stephen Gardner (since January 17, 2022)
  • President: Roger Harris
  • Subsidiaries: Chicago Union Station Company, among others

Amtrak’s Rail Network

Amtrak’s network extends across 21,400 miles (34,000 km) of track and includes over 500 stations. While Amtrak directly owns approximately 623 miles (1,003 km) of this track and operates another 132 miles, the remaining mileage runs on rail lines owned by other railroad companies.

Train Services and Performance

  • Daily Ridership: Nearly 87,000 passengers ride more than 300 Amtrak trains each day.
  • Popular Routes: About two-thirds of Amtrak’s ridership originates from the 10 largest metropolitan areas.
  • High-Speed Lines: While most routes have speed limits of 79 mph (127 km/h), some upgraded routes support speeds up to 110 mph (180 km/h), with parts of the Northeast Corridor reaching speeds of 160 mph (260 km/h).

Recent Developments

In 2024, Amtrak recorded 32.8 million riders following investments from the Biden administration aimed at improving services. This led to the launch of new lines, including the “Floridian” route between Chicago and Miami. Despite improvements, many parts of the country remain underserved by rail services, and delays are common.

Safety Initiatives

Amtrak actively promotes rail safety through collaboration with Operation Lifesaver (OLI) to reduce trespassing incidents and improve awareness at railroad crossings. The company frequently reminds the public of the dangers posed by disregarding warnings at crossings.

Family and Group Travel Offers

Amtrak offers several travel promotions, including:

  • Family Room: Designed for two adults and two children with bunk beds, inclusive meals, and spacious luggage allowances.
  • Discounts:
    • Students: Save up to 15% on bookings made one day in advance.
    • Families: Save 50% on fares for children aged 2-12.
    • Groups: Save up to 60% on group travel.
    • Late-Night Riders: Special low fares between 7 pm and 7 am on routes between Washington, D.C., and Boston.

Elon Musk’s Views on Amtrak

Elon Musk has publicly criticized Amtrak, labeling the service “embarrassing” when compared to international train services. He has advocated for privatizing Amtrak, believing it would improve efficiency and competitiveness. In contrast, Amtrak asserts that its business performance is strong, with record-high ridership and revenue.

Emergency Information

In the event of an emergency involving Amtrak services, the customer service hotline is 00 1 215-856-7924.
