Glendale is a city in Los Angeles County, California, located about 10 miles north of downtown Los Angeles in the Verdugo Mountains region. With a population of over 196,000, it is the fourth-most populous city in LA County and the 24th-largest in California. Known as the “Jewel City,” Glendale is a diverse, economically vibrant community that has served as a major center for the American animation industry and is home to one of the largest Armenian diaspora communities outside of Armenia.
Animation Capital of the World
Glendale has played a pivotal role in the history of American animation. The city is home to DreamWorks Animation, Disneytoon Studios, and Marvel Animation, making it one of the most important animation production centers in the world. Walt Disney himself established his first studio just outside Glendale in the 1920s, and the city’s connection to the entertainment industry continues to this day. The presence of these studios has created thousands of jobs and has helped shape the visual culture of generations of Americans.
The Armenian Community
Glendale is home to one of the largest Armenian communities outside of Armenia. The city’s Armenian population began growing in the early 20th century and expanded significantly after the Armenian Genocide and subsequent waves of immigration. Today, Armenian culture is deeply woven into the fabric of the city — from Armenian restaurants and bakeries on Brand Boulevard to churches, schools, and cultural organizations. The city hosts an annual Armenian Independence Day celebration and is a center of Armenian-American political and cultural life.
The Americana at Brand and Shopping
The Americana at Brand is one of the most popular outdoor shopping and lifestyle centers in the Los Angeles area. This beautifully designed open-air mall features over 80 stores, including Nordstrom, Barnes & Noble, and The Cheesecake Factory, along with a movie theater, a carousel, and beautifully landscaped gardens. The center’s architecture evokes a European village atmosphere and has become a social hub for the region.
Glendale’s downtown, centered around Brand Boulevard, also features the historic Alex Theatre, a beautifully restored 1925 movie palace that hosts concerts, comedy shows, and film screenings. The theatre’s Mediterranean Revival architecture and Wurlitzer organ make it one of the most charming venues in the LA area.
Grand Central Airport and History
Glendale was once home to Grand Central Airport, one of the earliest commercial airports in the Los Angeles area. The airport’s historic Art Deco terminal, built in 1928, still stands today and is a recognized landmark. While commercial aviation has moved to larger airports, the terminal remains a reminder of Glendale’s role in the early days of American air travel.
The city was incorporated on February 15, 1906, and grew rapidly in the early 20th century as a residential suburb of Los Angeles. The city’s tree-lined streets, hillside homes, and proximity to both downtown LA and the San Gabriel Mountains have made it a desirable place to live for over a century.
Parks and Outdoor Recreation
Glendale is surrounded by natural beauty. The Verdugo Mountains offer hiking trails with panoramic views of the Los Angeles Basin, and the city has over 30 parks. The Deukmejian Wilderness Park, a 709-acre preserve in the northern part of the city, offers some of the best hiking in the LA area, with trails through chaparral and oak woodlands leading to stunning overlooks.
The city is also adjacent to Griffith Park, one of the largest urban parks in the United States, giving residents easy access to hiking, the Griffith Observatory, and the Los Angeles Zoo.
Climate and Geography
Glendale sits at 522 feet above sea level in the Verdugo Mountains, between the San Fernando Valley and the San Gabriel Valley. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The city covers 30.6 square miles and enjoys over 280 days of sunshine per year. The combination of hillside homes, tree-lined streets, and mountain views gives Glendale a distinctive character within the Los Angeles sprawl.
