History and Heritage
The Carson area was originally inhabited by the Tongva people for thousands of years. It lies on part of Rancho San Pedro, a Spanish land grant from the King of Spain in 1784. The city was named after George Henry Carson, who married a daughter of the Dominguez family in 1857 and managed the rancho. Oil was discovered at Dominguez Hill in 1921, and the first producing well was drilled in 1923, making the area an important part of California’s early oil industry.
Carson’s location near the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach has made it a major industrial and logistics center. The city is home to numerous warehouses, distribution centers, and manufacturing facilities. The Alameda Corridor, a major freight rail line, runs through the region, connecting the ports to the rest of the country. Carson is also home to the Tesla Design Studio and has a significant presence in the automotive and energy sectors.

Carson sits at just 39 feet above sea level on the coastal plain, near the Pacific Ocean. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The city covers 19 square miles and enjoys over 280 days of sunshine per year. The Dominguez Hills rise to the south, and the Los Angeles Harbor is nearby.
