Coney Island is where New York goes to have fun: loud, brash, slightly worn around the edges, and absolutely unforgettable. The boardwalk stretches along the Atlantic, the Cyclone’s wooden tracks rattle overhead, and the smell of hot dogs and saltwater taffy fills the air. It has served as the city’s seaside playground for over a century.

History

Coney Island was originally a barrier island inhabited by the Lenape people before Dutch settlers named it “Konijn Eilandt” (Rabbit Island) in the 1600s. By the mid-19th century, hotels and bathhouses began drawing crowds from Manhattan. The arrival of the subway in 1920 made Coney Island accessible to everyone, and three major amusement parks (Luna Park, Dreamland, and Steeplechase Park) competed for visitors. The Cyclone roller coaster opened in 1927 and still runs today on its original wooden track. The famous Nathan’s Famous hot dog stand opened in 1916 and started the Fourth of July hot dog eating contest in 1972. Coney Island declined after World War II as suburban amusement parks drew crowds away, but a revival in the 2000s brought new rides, the MCU Park baseball stadium, and year-round attractions.

Visitor Tips

Summer weekends are packed — go on a weekday or early in the morning for shorter lines. The Cyclone is worth the hype but it’s a rough ride; sit in the front or back car. Nathan’s is a must but expect a line. The beach is free and clean, with lifeguards on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Take the D, F, N, or Q subway train to Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue. The Mermaid Parade in June is one of New York’s wildest and most creative annual events.

Cultural Impact

Coney Island invented the modern amusement park. Luna Park’s electric lights and fantastical architecture inspired the “electric city” concept that Walt Disney later used for Disneyland. The Cyclone is a National Historic Landmark and has been imitated by every wooden coaster since. Coney Island has appeared in everything from The Warriors to Requiem for a Dream to Woody Allen’s Radio Days. For travelers who’ve seen the green spaces of Central Park, Coney Island offers a completely different kind of urban recreation that is gritty, salty, and unapologetically commercial. The neighborhoods around it, including parts of Harlem that contributed to its jazz-age popularity, gave Coney Island its multicultural character. And if you’ve visited Manhattan‘s museums, a day at Coney Island is the perfect palate cleanser before more serious sightseeing.
