Yonkers is the fourth-largest city in New York State, and yet most international visitors have never heard of it. That’s part of its appeal. Sitting just north of the Bronx along the Hudson River, Yonkers is a genuine city — not a suburb, not a bedroom community — with a diverse population, a revitalized waterfront, and a history that stretches back to the Dutch colonial era. For travelers willing to venture beyond Manhattan, Yonkers rewards with uncrowded attractions and a real sense of New York life outside the tourist bubble.
Getting There and Getting Around
Yonkers is remarkably accessible from Manhattan. Metro-North trains from Grand Central Terminal reach Yonkers station in about 20 to 25 minutes, making it an easy day trip or a convenient base for exploring the lower Hudson Valley. Bee-Line buses cover the city for local trips, and ride-sharing services are readily available. If you’re driving, the Saw Mill River Parkway and I-87 both run through the city.
What to See and Do
The Hudson River waterfront is Yonkers’ biggest asset. The recently renovated Yonkers Pier stretches into the river with walking paths, public art, and views of the Palisades that rival anything across the water in New Jersey. The Science Barge, a floating environmental education center docked at the pier, is a unique stop that appeals to curious travelers of all ages. Philippsburg Manor is a must-see for history buffs. This 17th-century Dutch colonial estate on the Hudson was once one of the largest private landholdings in America, and the restored manor house and grounds offer a window into a world that predates the United States itself. The tours are intimate and the riverside setting is genuinely beautiful. For something completely different, Untermyer Gardens is a 43-acre public garden that was once the estate of a prominent New York lawyer. The Persian-inspired garden design, with its reflecting pools, colonnades, and terraced plantings, feels like stumbling onto a secret in the middle of a city. It’s free to visit and rarely crowded. The Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway is a major draw for those who enjoy harness racing and gaming. Even if gambling isn’t your thing, the energy of a live race is worth experiencing at least once.
Where to Eat
Yonkers has one of the most diverse food scenes in Westchester County, reflecting its large immigrant communities. Italian, Mexican, Albanian, Middle Eastern, and South Asian restaurants all compete for attention. The Nepperhan Avenue corridor is a great place to wander and follow your nose — you’ll find everything from wood-fired pizza to excellent tacos to traditional Albanian dishes you won’t see on many menus. For a sit-down meal, the waterfront restaurants along the Hudson offer the best views in town. Several gastropubs and cafes have opened in renovated industrial buildings near the train station, giving the downtown area a lively evening atmosphere.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall are the best seasons. April through June and September through November bring mild temperatures perfect for walking the waterfront and exploring the gardens. Summer is warm but pleasant, and the city hosts outdoor concerts and festivals throughout July and August. Winter is cold but manageable — the gardens take on a stark beauty, and Philippsburg Manor runs special holiday events in December.
Practical Tips
Yonkers is significantly cheaper than Manhattan for hotels and meals, and the short train ride makes it practical to stay in the city and commute in for sightseeing. The downtown and waterfront areas are generally safe during the day and evening. As with any city, some neighborhoods are quieter than others — stick to the main corridors at night. Tipping follows standard US norms. Metro-North tickets from Grand Central cost under $10 each way, making Yonkers one of the most affordable day trips from New York City.
