In-House Seam Sealing and Seam Taping
We tape the seams on our own production line, not through a subcontractor. Every waterproof shell is heat-sealed over the needle holes, inspected, and water tested before it leaves the floor.
Water wicks through the needle holes.
Tape bonds over the seam, water stops.
Why seams leak, and why taping fixes it
Most waterproof marketing talks about the fabric. In real rain, the seam is where a jacket usually fails, because the fabric is only as waterproof as the holes the needle punched through it.
-
Sewing makes holes
Every stitch punches through the membrane, leaving a line of small openings. On an unsealed garment, water wicks along those threads and into the layer behind them.
-
A membrane is only waterproof at the fabric
A breathable membrane keeps liquid out while letting sweat vapor escape, but that only holds across unbroken fabric. Leave the seam open and the membrane claim no longer protects the wearer.
-
Tape closes the seam
Seam tape is a strip of polyurethane film bonded to the seam with heat and pressure. It bridges the stitch holes and the thread line, so there is no open path for water to follow.
Our in-house seam-sealing line
Taping is a controlled heat process, so it belongs on a line we run and monitor ourselves. Here is exactly what we do and where.
Tagum City production floor, on the same line as cutting, sewing, and finishing, so a taped batch never waits in an outside queue.
Hot-air and heat-seal taping machines with digital temperature control and adjustable roller pressure, so the bond is even along the full seam.
Flat-felled, overlock, and bound seams across shells, hoods, shoulders, sleeves, pockets, and zip openings.
13 mm and 20 mm tape, matched to the seam type and fabric weight instead of one width for every garment.
A dedicated seam inspector checks coverage and adhesion after taping and before the garment is packed.
We control the temperature window on every batch, and a fault is corrected on the spot rather than shipped back and forth.
Hot-air seam-sealing machines
Our production floor uses industrial pneumatic hot-air seam-sealing machines engineered for technical outerwear, protective suits, and heavy weatherproof gear. The heating nozzle directs hot air directly between the polyurethane tape adhesive layer and the fabric membrane while dual synchronized feed rollers fuse them under calibrated pressure.

Hot-air sealing mechanics and nozzle geometry
A hot-air sealing machine operates on three interconnected variables: air temperature, travel speed, and roller pinch pressure. The machine's ceramic element heats filtered compressed air, which discharges through a specialized nozzle positioned millimeters ahead of the roller nip point.
As the hot air activates the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) hot-melt adhesive, the upper and lower silicone rollers press the molten tape into the fabric matrix, filling every stitch needle perforation before cooling.
Straight Flat Nozzle (20 mm)
Standard delivery for main body panels, side seams, and straight pant outseams where continuous air dispersion is critical.
Curved Contour Nozzle (14 mm)
Specialized narrow angle nozzle for 3D curves around hood crowns, underarm gussets, and jacket collar seamlines.
Differential Silicone Rollers
High-temperature food-grade silicone rollers provide uniform compression without marking delicate outer shell coatings.
PID Digital Temperature Loop
Constant thermocouple monitoring prevents temperature spikes that could melt the fabric's internal breathable membrane.
Tape and seam matrix
Not every seam needs the same treatment. We match tape and method to the garment area and the water protection the garment is built for.
| Garment area | Tape and method | Target | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main shell seams | 3-layer PU tape, 20 mm, heat-sealed | 10K to 20K mm | On 3-layer waterproof and ski shells |
| Shoulder and sleeve seams | 2-layer PU tape, 13 mm, heat-sealed | Waterproof | Where fabric is lighter and movement is high |
| Hood seams | Taped and bound construction | Waterproof | Stops drips at the crown and neck |
| Pocket and zip openings | Taped surrounds and sealed zips | Water resistant | Waterproof zips on premium shells |
| Windbreaker seams | Optional PU tape on request | Water resistant | Standard windbreakers stay DWR only |
Six steps from raw seam to sealed seam
Every taped garment follows the same sequence. Skipping the inspection step is how leaks survive into the box, so we never skip it.
Cut and mark
Panels are cut and marked so seams align before sewing.
Sew the seam
The seam is stitched to the spec for that garment area.
Inspect the raw seam
We check stitch density and seam flatness before taping.
Apply tape
The correct tape width is laid over the seam line.
Heat-seal under pressure
Heat and roller pressure bond the tape to the fabric.
Water test and pack
A water test confirms the seal, then the batch is packed.
Garments we seam-seal
We tape seams across every waterproof and weather outerwear line we produce. Open a category to see the specific construction.
How we test a sealed seam
A tape job that looks right on the machine can still fail in the field. These checks are what separate a sealed seam from a decorative one.
Water spray test
A pressurized spray is run over the taped seam for a set dwell time. Any wicking to the inner layer fails the batch.
Hydrostatic head check
Fabric plus seam is measured against the water column target, 10K to 20K mm on premium shells, to confirm the taping did not weaken the fabric rating.
Seam peel and flex check
Tape adhesion is checked after flexing the seam, so the seal survives folding, packing, and wear rather than only the bench.
Wash durability
Taped seams are re-checked after repeated gentle washes to confirm the bond holds across the life of the garment.
Batch traceability
Every taped batch is logged with tape lot, machine temperature, and the inspector's mark, so a query traces back to the exact run.
Color and branding
Logos and printed panels are matched to Pantone with a color difference (Delta E) under 2.0, and taping never runs across a branded panel.
Production and paperwork. Official BIR 2307 invoicing, DOLE registered production, and batch documentation are available for procurement teams that need them on file.
Seam sealing questions
What is seam sealing?
Seam sealing is the process of covering the stitched seam of a waterproof garment with a strip of polyurethane tape. The tape is bonded with heat and pressure over the needle holes, so water has no open path through the seam. Seam taping and seam sealing mean the same thing.
Do you seal seams in house or outsource the taping?
We seal seams in house on our Tagum City production floor, on the same line as cutting and sewing. Taping is a controlled heat process, so keeping it in house lets us hold the temperature and pressure window steady and correct any fault before the batch is packed.
Which garments can be seam-sealed?
Waterproof jackets, outdoor and storm shells, ski and snowboard outerwear, and clean-area pharma apparel are taped as standard. Windbreakers and softshells are water-resistant by default and can be seam-taped on request when you need more protection than the DWR coating alone.
What tape do you use?
We use 2-layer and 3-layer polyurethane seam tape in 13 mm and 20 mm widths. The width and layer count are matched to the seam type and fabric weight, so a light sleeve seam and a heavy main shell seam are not treated the same way.
How do hot-air seam-sealing machines work?
Hot-air seam-sealing machines inject precise compressed air heated up to 700°C directly between the seam tape adhesive and the stitched garment seam. Synchronized upper and lower silicone rollers immediately press the molten polyurethane tape over the stitch perforations under 0.35 to 0.50 MPa of pneumatic pressure, creating an impermeable waterproof weld.
How is a sealed seam tested?
Taped seams are water spray tested against the target for the garment, checked against the hydrostatic head for premium shells, and flexed to confirm tape adhesion. Every batch is logged with tape lot, temperature, and inspector mark.
Does seam taping change how I wash the garment?
No. Wash on a gentle cycle with cold water and a technical fabric detergent, then tumble dry on low heat to reactivate the water-repellent finish. Avoid fabric softener and high heat, which degrade both the tape and the DWR coating.
