Nike has unveiled an extraordinary collection of custom-built equipment for Faith Kipyegon’s upcoming attempt to become the first woman to run a sub-four-minute mile. The gear, revealed in an exclusive look at the Nike Sport Research Lab in Beaverton, Oregon, represents the pinnacle of track-specific apparel and footwear innovation.

Victory Elite FK Spikes: Built for One Mile

The centerpiece of the kit is the Nike Victory Elite FK, a prototype track spike engineered specifically for Kipyegon’s record attempt. The “FK” stands for “Faith Kipyegon” and “Fastest Known,” signaling the shoe’s singular purpose: to deliver the fastest mile ever run by a woman.

Weighing just 85 grams (under 3 ounces), the Victory Elite FK is 25 percent lighter than the Victory 2 spikes Kipyegon has long worn in competition. To put that in perspective, the shoe’s FlyKnit upper weighs only three grams — the same as three paper clips. Nike achieved this by using a never-before-used lightweight yarn and an open knit structure, prioritizing race-day speed over long-term durability since the shoe only needs to last four laps.

The spike features the tallest Air unit ever built into a track spike, delivering maximum energy return. A carbon-fiber outsole plate with six titanium pins provides the grip Kipyegon requested after testing. While the stack height is within World Athletics’ permitted limits (under 20mm), Nike has not submitted the shoe for formal approval, preserving flexibility for last-minute adjustments.

The Fly Suit: Aerodynamic Innovation

Complementing the spikes is a custom one-piece speed suit called the Fly Suit, designed in Nike’s wind tunnel to minimize drag. The sleeveless suit covers most of Kipyegon’s thighs and is paired with arm and leg sleeves plus a headband, all covered with strategically placed “Aeronodes” — half-dome shaped bumps that help air flow smoothly around the athlete’s body.

Nike tested multiple iterations in Kenya with Kipyegon, observing even subtle movements like tugging at sleeves to perfect the fit. The team even shifted a seam on the suit to keep the Aeronodes uninterrupted, ensuring optimal aerodynamics.

3D-Printed FlyWeb Bra

Rounding out the kit is the FlyWeb Bra, a 3D-printed sports bra made from TPU material that forms a lightweight, breathable spiderweb structure. It’s hydrophobic, so it won’t absorb sweat during the race, and delivers distraction-free support. Elements of this bra may eventually make their way to consumer products.

A New Chapter in Track Apparel

Kipyegon’s sub-4 attempt marks another milestone in the evolution of track and field gear. From Nike’s carbon-fiber-plated super shoes that reshaped distance running to this ultra-lightweight, athlete-specific prototype, the innovations on display show what’s possible when durability requirements are set aside for pure performance.

The attempt itself follows historic precedent. The current women’s mile world record of 4:07.64, set by Sifan Hassan in 2019, is the target. Kipyegon, the Olympic and world champion in the 1500m and 5000m, has already proven she can rewrite the record books. Now she’ll have the most advanced track gear ever built to help her do it.
