History and Development
Uzbekistan became an independent footballing nation following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Uzbekistan Football Association joined FIFA and the AFC in 1994, and the national team played its first official matches that same year. Early years were spent building infrastructure and establishing domestic leagues capable of producing international-caliber talent.
The team’s first major tournament appearance came at the 1996 AFC Asian Cup, where they were eliminated in the group stage. Progress was gradual but steady — Uzbekistan reached the quarterfinals in 2004, 2007, 2011, and 2015, establishing themselves as a consistent knockout-phase team despite falling short of the semifinals.
