Uzbekistan became an independent footballing nation following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The 2024 Paris Olympics represented Uzbekistan’s biggest senior international stage: the men’s football team finished fourth after a 2-1 loss to Spain in the bronze-medal match, marking the first Olympic medal in football for an Asian nation outside of South Korea and Japan. Eldor Shomurodov, the team’s captain, has scored 41 international goals since 2019 and was a leading scorer in the 2024 AFC Asian Cup (where Uzbekistan advanced to the quarterfinals). The U-23 side won the 2022 AFC U-23 Asian Cup on home soil. The Uzbek Super League has produced most of the senior squad, with Pakhtakor Tashkent having won the most titles.
