The FIFA World Cup 2026 is officially underway, and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has dropped a surprise that has the city buzzing. In partnership with Brooklyn-based Mazzi Sports, the mayor’s office has launched a limited-edition line of NYC-inspired soccer jerseys priced at just $50 — a fraction of the cost of official World Cup kits from major sportswear brands.

Produced entirely by hand at Mazzi’s Bedford-Stuyvesant factory, the limited run consists of just 1,500 shirts — 500 pieces per colorway — ensuring exclusivity for early buyers. The jerseys are available in three bold color combinations: classic black and white, taxi-cab yellow and black, and a vibrant blue and orange-red that could double as Knicks or USMNT gear.

The design features a soccer-ball-ified Big Apple logo over the heart with a small pigeon emblem on the opposite side, “NEW YORK CITY” emblazoned across the chest, and the number “26” on the back. The retro-inspired graphic style echoes the city’s charming official World Cup campaign imagery.

Mazzi Sports, a family-owned apparel studio in Brooklyn, handled every stitch of production. By keeping manufacturing local and selling at cost, the city is offering fans an affordable way to represent the host nation without paying the premium prices associated with official tournament apparel.

“Jerseys represent more than just the team you support,” Mayor Mamdani told GQ in an exclusive interview. “They are about pride in where you come from and who you are. With this limited run, we are offering New Yorkers an affordable jersey made for New Yorkers, by New Yorkers.”

The jerseys go on sale Friday, June 12 at 9 a.m. exclusively at the NYC City Store, available in-person only. No online orders are being taken, so fans will need to line up to snag one.

The jersey launch is part of a broader push by Mamdani’s office to make the World Cup more accessible for New Yorkers. The city has also secured 1,000 $50 tickets to matches at MetLife Stadium and set up free fan events and watch parties across the five boroughs.

With official World Cup kits from Nike and Adidas selling for $135 to $185 for authentic versions, the $50 NYC jerseys are a refreshingly affordable alternative for fans who want to show their host-city pride. This initiative stands out as one of the most practical and community-driven World Cup merchandise stories of the tournament so far.

If you’re in New York during the World Cup, this is worth the trip. Local, affordable, hand-made, and limited — it captures the spirit of the city and the tournament in one shirt.
