UAAP Season 89 now running

University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP)

The UAAP was formalized on September 27, 1938 with Far Eastern University, National University, University of Santo Tomas, and University of the Philippines as founding members. Today 8 Metro Manila universities compete across collegiate, womens, and high school divisions under the core principles of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and amateurism.

History

From the Big Three League to the national collegiate stage

The roots go back further than 1938. In 1924 Dr. Regino Ylanan of UP gathered school athletic directors to organize collegiate sport. That effort fed the early NCAA, then the 1932 split when NU, UP, and UST formed the Big Three League for fairer university level play. FEU stood in for UP in 1935, and in 1938 the four schools accepted the UP Alumni Association and PAAF invitation to form a permanent body, the UAAP.

  1. 1924: Ylanan convenes Ateneo, De La Salle, San Beda, NU, University of Manila, UST, and Institute of Accounts to set collegiate athletic policy.
  2. 1932: NU, UP, and UST secede and inaugurate the Big Three League, starting with basketball.
  3. 1938: UAAP founded on September 27 with FEU, NU, UST, and UP. First events include basketball, baseball, football, womens volleyball, swimming, athletics, and track and field.
  4. 1942 to 1946: Competition suspended during the occupation. Play resumes in 1947.
  5. 1952 to 1954: UE, Adamson, Manila Central University, and University of Manila admitted on probation. UE earns permanent status in 1954. MCU stays until 1962.
  6. 1970 to 1974: Adamson returns on probation, hosts the 1974 to 1975 season, earns permanent membership.
  7. 1978 and 1986: Ateneo joins in 1978. La Salle joins in 1986. The modern 8 is complete.
  8. 2020 to 2022: Season 82 ends early in April 2020. Season 83 is cancelled. The league resumes with Season 84 in March 2022.
  9. 2021: UAAP unveils the sipa inspired logo, replacing the 1986 circular seal of 8 school colors.
  10. 2027 plan: The Home of the UAAP arena in Pasig is scheduled to open for the 90th season with seating above 8,000. Groundbreaking started October 24, 2025 with Akari as partner.
